**GENERAL DESCRIPTION**:
Working under close supervision, the Summer Student will provide support to the Legal Services Department by performing research on statutes, regulations, the common law, municipal bylaws, policies and procedures, preparing preliminary drafts, and performing other work as necessary. The Summer Student will be expected to make use of online sources including LexisNexis, Quicklaw, Westlaw, CanLII, as well as the Municipality’s in-house resources.

Specific tasks the Summer Student will be expected to perform include:

- Reviewing, summarizing, and organizing legal opinions, legal memos, and precedent files.

**QUALIFICATIONS**

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES**:

- Excellent research, analysis, writing and communication skills, including the ability to express points of view succinctly and logically.
- Ability to prioritize work, while working within tight deadlines.
- Demonstrates a high degree of professionalism, discretion, confidentiality and ability to deal with the public in a tactful and professional manner.
- Strong listening, interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook) and legal research databases.
- Basic knowledge of legislative framework within which the Municipality operates (e.g. Municipal Government Act).

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**:

- The incumbent must currently be enrolled in their second year of a Law Degree program and returning to full time post-secondary studies in the fall semester.
