The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s used nuclear fuel inside a deep geological repository, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.
- Founded in 2002, the NWMO has been guided for 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Holders that are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. Canada’s plan will only proceed in an area with informed and willing hosts, where the municipality, First Nation and Métis communities, and others in the area are working together to implement it. The NWMO plans to select a site in 2024, and two areas remain in our site selection process: the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation-Ignace area in northwestern Ontario and the Saugeen Ojibway Nation-South Bruce area in southern Ontario.

- Job Summary:

- Reporting to the Director, Corporate Communications, the Digital Communications Specialist leads the digital communications team and develops, implements, manages, measures, monitors and continuously evolves the NWMO’s digital communications platforms, governance and strategies. Establishing and securing executive level support for digital communications strategies is key to this role. The position manages digital channels and projects with an aim to continuously improve the NWMO’s online presence and reach relevant audiences in support of business objectives. The Digital Communications Specialist inputs and supports strategies developed by other members of the Communications team and ensures leads implementation of digital aspects to strategically deliver communication programs, strategies and campaigns. The position also oversees social media monitoring and identifies emerging issues and provide strategic advice on online issues management. The Specialist also provide oversight and guidance to content contributors and develops and delivers digital communications training to employees. Acts as an online publisher of content representing the NWMO brand and will be responsible for creating editorial plans and content for a range of digital channels.

**Responsibilities**:

- Develop, implement, manage, monitor, measure and continuously evolve the NWMO’s digital communications platforms, strategies and governance.
- Establish and secure executive level support for digital communications strategies.
- Develop, update, implement and monitor adherence to appropriate communications governance and style guides.
- Actively monitor and manage the NWMO’s online presence and properties (website, social media channels) with an aim to continuous improvement.
- Oversee timely social media monitoring, ensure misinformation is corrected and risks are appropriately flagged and mitigated quickly working together with relevant team members and leadership.
- Act as website publisher, keeping the content up-to-date and providing ongoing improvements to the website and its content and functionality.
- Establish and maintain a strong NWMO presence on relevant social media platforms, including developing and implementing the social media strategy, guidelines, protocols and tactical plans. Stay apprised of trends and changing technology and platforms with an aim to keep the NWMO’s digital properties relevant.
- Develop, lead and sometimes input into communications plans, strategies and campaigns, sometimes based on confidential information, to strategically deliver two-way communication programs to arrange of audiences using digital platforms.
- Proactively monitor identify emerging issues, provide timely strategic communications and issues advice that is aligned with corporate objectives, policies and protocols.
- Provide oversight and guidance to employees within the Communications Team and across the organization as it relates to appropriate content and the use of digital tools.
- Develop and deliver training to employees on digital communications tools/topics.
- Develop and deliver briefings and skills workshops for external groups working with the NWMO who would like to more actively engage in social media. Depending on circumstances, this may include developing and delivering training directly, or hiring and managing an outside vendor to deliver it.
- Use consistent proactive and reactive messages to effectively tell the NWMO story across all digital platforms and align and integrate appropriately with offline messages.
