To achieve this, we hire talented and driven people interested in working in a dynamic part of the financial services industry in Canada. We are currently hiring for a Manager, Federal Government Relations.
The Manager, Federal Government Relations develops and implements advocacy strategies to advance objectives of the credit union sector and grows the internal advocacy effectiveness within the credit union sector, in order to improve the legislative, regulatory and taxation frameworks that govern credit unions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

**Deliverables and Main Supporting Activities**:
1. Develop and implement advocacy strategies for the issues of concern to the credit union sector, in order to bring positive change at the federal level
- Identifying priority policy areas in collaboration with members and colleagues on Policy and GR teams
- Developing and executing the appropriate advocacy strategy for each issue
- Creating awareness of the advocacy strategy amongst members
- Representing the CU sector at parliamentary committee meetings as required
- Drafting GR and communications products and federal consultation responses

2. Plan and coordinate the annual Government Relations Forum and Hike the Hill advocacy day in Ottawa.
- Planning of the theme and program for the event
- Booking presenters and panelists.
- Determining the main advocacy issues.
- Developing the delegate binder
- Arranging meetings with legislators for CU member participants
- In collaboration with GR, policy, and event staff, plan and execute entire event, including communication of calendar/schedule of events and ensuring all meetings and any collateral material is provided to CU members in advance of the event

3. Improve and increase the credit union sector’s internal advocacy effectiveness through coordination of Hike the Hill at Home efforts
- Developing materials and toolkits for advocates
- Work with Regional GR teams to identify target dates and legislators
- Host training webinars for advocates

4. Member and committee relations
- Act as the main federal government relations contact for all members
- Coordinate Legislative & Regulatory Affairs Committee (LRAC) group and organize meetings
- Work closely with federally-regulated CUs on policy priorities

Communication
- Internal: Internal communications are mainly within our own division, with some cross-division interaction. This position involves frequent exchange of information, collaboration, problem-solving and consensus - building.
- External: External communications flow mainly in two streams. The first is communicating with legislators and regulators to build relationships and bring forward issues of concern. Second is communicating with our members and committees to seek their input and to provide information to them.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Undergraduate degree in the disciplines of public relations, business, or political science.

Experience
- 5 years’ experience in the fields of advocacy, government relations, or in a political office

- Issues management
- Developing and giving presentations
- Ability to write, research and produce correspondence, briefings, and verbal presentations
- Ability to distill complex policy ideas into plain language
- Knowledge of co-operatives, non-profits, or industry associations
- Strong communication skills
- Discretion, tact, the ability to act independently and with good judgement
- Ability to work successfully independently and across geographically distributed teams
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage simultaneous priorities within tight deadlines

Working Conditions, Physical Requirements, or Other Special Requirements
- Majority of work is performed within a “hybrid” work environment in that the location where the work is being performed during the work week will take place primarily at a home office or remotely and on occasion in a typical office environment
- No physical effort required beyond day-to-day movement such as sitting, standing, walking, etc.
- Moderate audio / visual effort requirements. Repetitive tasks, some switching of concentrated attention between tasks, limited capability to control the pace of work.
