We are looking to fill the permanent part-time position of Display Technician II. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with experience building and maintaining museum exhibits and displays and who wants to make an impact in a dynamic non-profit environment. The position is supervised by the Exhibit Designer and works collaboratively with the Curator and Curator of Collections.

This is a Permanent Part-Time union position with benefits (extended health and dental care, pension, and employee savings plan), as laid out in the Collective Agreement between CUPE 15 and the Vancouver Maritime Museum Society. The position is four days (28 hours) a week, with the suggested schedule of Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Pay Grade 19, Step 1 ($22.86).

This is skilled technical and trades work involving the construction and installation of a variety of exhibitions and displays in a museum. Work of this class can involve carpentry, cabinet making, painting, finishing and similarly related tasks as well as the installation and basic troubleshooting of information and computer technology in exhibitions and displays.

Examples of Work
- Performs carpentry and cabinet making tasks in the construction of display cases; fabricates and finishes cases, installs lighting fixtures and glass or plexi-glass partitions, and fabricates and installs mounts for artefact.
- Constructs exhibitions and displays by performing such tasks as framing, electrical wiring, drywalling, finished carpentry, painting and similar tasks.
- Performs a variety of miscellaneous trades and technical tasks including glass cutting, metal fabricating, assembling large artefacts, and making mechanical repairs.
- Installs information and computer technology in exhibitions and displays; troubleshoots basic hardware and software issues and makes recommendations for repair and/or upgrade.
- May supervise the work of one or more junior
- Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
- Considerable knowledge of and ability to perform the standard practices, methods, materials, power tools and equipment used in carpentry, and cabinet making.
- Considerable knowledge of the techniques, materials and methods used in two
- and three-dimensional display work.
- Considerable knowledge of hazards and necessary safety precautions involved in the work.
- Working knowledge of related trades such as painting and metal working and of the uses of a variety of materials such as glass and plastics.
- Some knowledge of the theories and practices of commercial art as it relates to the construction of museum
- Ability to plan a schedule and estimate the time and materials need to complete tasks, and deadlines for exhibition scheduling.
- Ability to read and work from blueprints and rough sketches and perform semi-skilled tasks involving a variety of trades relative to the construction of museum exhibitions and displays.
- Ability to install computer hardware and software in exhibitions and displays and to perform basic hardware and software troubleshooting.Skill in the use and care of a wide variety of hand and power tools.

Desirable Training and Experience

Completion of the twelfth school grade supplemented by courses in the visual arts and one or more trades relevant to the work, plus considerable experience in display and exhibition work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia.
