Edmonton, Canada Government of Alberta Full time

**Job Information**:
Job Requisition ID: 54763
Scope: Open Competition
Closing Date: March 11, 2024

Classification: Human Services Worker 6E
Ministry: Office of the Child & Youth Advocate
Location: Edmonton
Full or Part-time: Full-time
Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week

**About Us**:
The Office of the Child and Youth Advocate (OCYA) is an Office of the Legislature. Our Office provides advocacy for children and youth receiving or seeking to receive services under the _Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act_ and the _Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act_, and youth involved with the youth justice system. The OCYA is also responsible for providing legal representation for young people in matters related to the _Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act_ and the _Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act_. The OCYA conducts investigations and reports on issues arising from the serious injury to or death of a young person. The OCYA engages stakeholders in understanding the importance of respecting young people’s individual and collective rights, interests, and viewpoints, as well as delivers public education.

The impact of colonialism continues to adversely affect Indigenous young people, their families, and their communities. Intergenerational trauma, systemic racism, and the legacy of residential schools are experienced by many Indigenous young people, who continue to be overrepresented in the child intervention system. The OCYA is deeply committed to reconciliation, and a diverse and inclusive public service that reflects the population we serve to best meet the needs of Albertans. We are committed to a workplace that welcomes, respects and values the diversity of our employees. We also support them to be actively engaged in the workplace and the work we do to meet the needs of Alberta's young people.

**Role**:
We are seeking a passionate and committed individual to supervise the Intake team at the OCYA.

Intake Services is the first point of contact at the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate (OCYA) and plays an integral part in supporting and promoting the rights, interests, and viewpoints of children and youth receiving designated services. Intake responds to all requests and inquiries provincially and assists every young person (and referral source) who calls in navigating systems, learning about self-advocacy, and assessing if they fall under the mandate of the OCYA. Operating within the Child and Youth Advocate Act (CYAA), the position applies practice and policy guidelines for advocacy and legal representation and ensures that referrals are responded to with the appropriate level of support.

This position reports to a Manager of Advocacy Services and supervises a team of intake workers to ensure intakes are completed in a timely, accurate, and sensitive manner. This position interacts with a variety of stakeholders and determines client eligibility for OCYA services. This supervisory role ensures that intake workers are knowledgeable about the role and services offered internally, aware of external resources and system navigation, and ensure consistency in practice. This position also monitors and tracks the referrals received, along with ensuring OCYA standards are maintained.

This position communicates daily with the intake team in the completion and supervision of intakes and ensures that intakes are completed in a timely, accurate, and sensitive manner. The position will communicate regularly with their Manager, other Advocacy Services Managers, the Manager of LRCY, and Program Assistants, and will communicate as needed with other areas of the organization to ensure that systemic issues identified at intake are noted and that Intake Workers understand OCYA priorities and initiatives.

Intake receives many referrals that are outside the scope of direct services; this position works with the intake team to stay aware of resources and provide supportive services for young people whether in scope or not. This role is a liaison to other divisions within the office, due to Intake being the first point of contact.

**Qualifications**:
Bachelor of Social Work Degree (BSW) or related university degree plus 2 or more years of related experience. Supervisory experience is preferred. Equivalencies may be considered. Strong verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills are required to respond respectfully and professionally to inquiries from people of all ages and to provide timely and client-focused services.

Experience working with Alberta’s child intervention and/or youth justice systems, and knowledge of provincial legislation are assets.

Given the overinvolvement of the child intervention and youth justice systems in the lives of Indigenous young people, families, and communities, preference will be given to individuals who self-identify and are known to others as Indigenous or who have had extensive experience working with Indigenous peoples and communities.
