**SUMMARY**:
The First Nation Representative will represent TFN band membership children and Youth under the child and youth family services in Ontario and Quebec regardless of location, in court proceedings. The major role of the First Nation Representative is to protect the collective best interests of the TFN children and Youth and to ensure a culturally appropriate representation of the case. The representative will ensure all notifications from the Child Welfare Agencies are responded to and addressed within the mandated time frame.

**MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Act as an advocate at all child protection hearings and to lobby for prevention and intervention solutions directly affecting band membership children.
- Develop a working relationship with all Child and Family Services, CAS agencies and other

service providers engaged with First Nation members.
- Process intakes and assessments, obtains informed consent, collects client family background/case history, and develops a plan of care.
- Document notifications from the Child Welfare Agencies and respond to them in mandated time frame.
- Provide input and direction in case conferences, service planning with families including

caregivers of the children.
- Interact and support children through court proceedings, hearings, meetings with parents and

caregivers, as well as Indigenous and non-indigenous agencies and legal services.
- Practice strict confidentiality, privacy, ethical and non-bias approaches.
- Recruit and establish foster homes and volunteers within the community.
- Engage legal counsel to support the preparation of court documents and to represent the First

Nation in court on complex matters.
- Prepare for and attend settlement conferences to represent the First Nation’s interest and the

best interest of the child(ren).
- Oral and written presentations in court, as required.
- Assists to seek appropriate extended family placements and develop alternative safety plans in consideration of the child’s needs and prevention of removal from community.
- Respond and intervene in family crisis situations where children require immediate attention and prevention of child abuse and neglect.
- Accompany CAS workers with daily visits/investigations.
- Work with youth and young adults who are aging out or have aged out of
- care up to the age of 26.

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS**:

- BSW and/or College Diploma in Social Work/Law Clerk/Child and Youth Worker or related field.
- Bilingual (English and French).
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle and be willing to work flexible hours and travel with mínimal notice.
- Must provide a Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.

**KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS**:

- Knowledge of Bill C92.
- Knowledge of new developments within the Child Welfare sector regarding Indigenous families and children.
- Knowledge of Timiskaming First Nation (TFN) services, programs and culture, and relevant challenges and issues affecting First Nations.
- Ability to work effectively in a variety of settings and in a cross-cultural situation.
- Organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritize.
- Ability to work independently and ability to work in a team oriented, multi-disciplinary environment.
- Ability to represent TFN with a professional image and maintain confidentiality.
- Participate in training, cultural events and other mandatory training as required.

Pay: $23.00-$30.00 per hour
