Building and maintaining our provincial highway infrastructure is no small job.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) supports Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways, 4,100 bridges, and provincial ferries. The Vehicle Transportation Inspection Division of DPW is responsible for the inspection and compliance of all vehicles that use our highways. We inspire public confidence in the public passenger transportation service through inspections, education and enforcement of Acts and Regulations that pertain to all road users in our province.

**About Our Opportunity**:
As the Training and Outreach Manager, you have a direct effect on the safety of our provincial highway infrastructure and have the overall responsibility for the management, development and facilitation of the training program for Vehicle Compliance Officers, Motor Vehicle Inspectors, Carrier Safety Auditors and Motor Carrier Inspectors. You provide leadership, guidance and problem-solving direction to Vehicle Transportation Inspection Officers, Regional Managers and Administrative Staff, as well as the Senior Director, Vehicle Transport Inspection.

**Primary Accountabilities**:
You work in collaboration with other government departments that have similar training requirements and are responsible to ensure accreditation and appropriate record keeping of all staff completing the training program is in accordance with departmental requirements and the Standards, Acts, and Regulations. You are also the primary contact for the industry and the public for the delivery of communication and program initiatives. You also communicate with Provincial, State and Federal Jurisdictions to maintain uniformity and reciprocity of information and training.

**Qualifications and Experience**:
You must have several years of progressive, practical experience in delivering training, curriculum development as well as developing training modules; incorporating standards that promote road safety. You must be knowledgeable in industry divisions such as the Vehicle Act and all related Regulations, have a CVSA background and a strong background in vehicle mechanics.

You will be comfortable, confident and competent in delivering presentations and public speaking and have the ability to maintain and organize training records as well as coordinate all required training (Transportation of Dangerous goods, First Aid, WHIMIS, Traffic control Person, etc.).

As the Manager you have or will be able to acquire and maintain Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CSVA) Certification. Computer skills are required (including familiarly with Word Processing, Spread Sheets, Presentation Software, etc.). You have the ability develop curriculums for all of the groups within Vehicle Transportation Inspection (both the Vehicle Complaints (VC) and Motor Carrier (MC) divisions), and have ability to perform regular functions of a Mobile Officer when required. You will demonstrate analytical thinking, action management, team leadership, initiative, effective interactive communication, partnering and relationship building, as well as intercultural and diversity proficiency.

**Working Conditions**:
Due to staffing requirements of 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, the Manager needs to be accessible to make decisions and give guidance to staff working in the field. Such decisions could include the issuance of a special move permit, or an emergency that requires immediate attention, that is beyond the scope of the Officer on duty.

**Additional Information**:
The location of work is flexible within the province. You will be required to travel extensively throughout the province; in various weather and road conditions.
