Safety and Compliance Director

**Job Overview**:
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Safety Director to join our team. The Safety and Compliance Director is responsible for overseeing and implementing safety programs and policies to ensure the safe operation of the company’s fleet of trucks. The Safety and Compliance Director works closely with management, regulatory agencies, and other relevant parties to develop and maintain effective safety protocols and practices. You will play a key role in ensuring the trucks and other equipment are compliant with provincial and federal regulations, as well as maintaining compliance with regulatory standards and industry best practices.
**Responsibilities**:
- Develop comprehensive safety policies and procedures tailored to the specific needs of the transportation company
- Ensure the safety policies are effectively communicated to all relevant stakeholders, including employees, contractors, and drivers
- Stay abreast of all relevant regulations and laws governing transportation safety at the local, provincial, and federal levels
- Conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential safety hazards and areas for improvement
- Provide guidance to the team and work with them to enhance their skills
- Develop strategies to mitigate risks and enhance safety across all aspects of transportation operations
- Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees, emphasizing best practices, emergency procedures, and compliance requirements
- Oversee the investigation of transportation-related incidents, accidents, and near-misses.
- Analyze incident data to identify trends and implement corrective actions to prevent future occurrences
- Collaborate with fleet management teams to ensure that vehicles are properly maintained and equipped with necessary safety features
- Establish protocols for regular vehicle inspections, maintenance schedules, and safety checks
- Collaborate with other departments, such as operations, maintenance, and human resources, to integrate safety practices into all aspects of the business
**Requirements and Skills**
- Bachelor’s degree in transportation management, occupational health and safety, or a related field. Advanced degree or certifications in safety management are preferred
- 10+ years of proven experience in transportation industry with 5+ years in a leadership role with proven ability to manage teams
- Strong knowledge of relevant safety regulations, standards, and industry best practices
- Excelled analytical skills with the ability to identify and assess safety risks effectively
- Knowledge of transportation and logistics software, such as Fleet Manager and Load Link, will be considered an asset
- Excellent communication skills, organizational skills, and time management skills
- Proficiency in conducting investigations, analyzing data, and preparing reports
- Good command of MS Office operating systems (Excel, Word, and Outlook) with an ability to quickly learn new operating platforms/systems
- Familiarity with safety regulations and compliance requirements in the trucking industry (e.g., DOT regulations, FMCSA guidelines)
- Demonstrated ability to manage high-stress situations calmly and effectively
- Knowledge of different transportation laws and regulations within Canada and the USA
- Proficiency in electronic logging device (ELD) systems and vehicle camera systems
**Hours of Work**
- Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm
- Weekly hours may vary depending on operational/business needs
- Occasional weekend availability
- Occasional travel may be required
