The Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study Laboratory School is a Nursery to 6th Grade School at the University of Toronto. Our mission is to provide excellence in elementary education, teacher education, and research in an intentionally diverse environment.

Jackman ICS provides an environment that fosters research and professional inquiry. The School makes a significant contribution to the education, human development, and applied psychology work within our University and in the wider educational community in Canada and internationally.

The Lab School also serves a role in preparing pre-service teachers for their professional life through its contributions to the Jackman ICS Master of Arts in Child Study and Education program, providing both practicum experience, mentoring and course instruction by our teaching staff.

**Your opportunity**:
Working as part of the Jackman Institute for Child Study Laboratory School (JICS) this position will be responsible for: the ongoing supervision of lunch time and recess; room and space set up; implementation of indoor and outdoor daily activities; daily safety check of school yard; cleaning/organizing equipmentand other areas of the classroom as needed and providing caregiving routines such as toileting, serving snacks, dressing children to go outside, etc.

The School Programs Assistant will also work with all JICS staff in ensuring the overall health and safety of all children by maintaining a sanitary and safe environment; providing assistance with arranging children’s play space to reflect the philosophy of the school and curriculum and building and maintaining responsive relationships with children.

**Your responsibilities will include**:

- Coordinating the preparation of space, materials and equipment required for daily programming activities
- Listening actively to the needs of children and engages in interactions to foster cooperation
- Modelling positive behaviour to children under care
- Assessing behavioural issues and reporting problems as required
- Ensuring that equipment and spaces support programming and curriculum principles
- Providing proactive care to prevent physical or emotional injury or harm

**Essential Qualifications**:

- College Diploma (2 years), Registered Early Childhood Educator (ECE) or Early Childcare Assistant (ECA) certification.
- Minimum two years recent and relevant child care experience.
- Experience supervising children and performing safety checks.
- Experience with room set-up and coordinating room logistics.
- First Aid Certification required.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and implement developmentally appropriate play-based programs and activities based on the observed interests of children.
- Ability to interpret and implement policies and procedures.
- Intermediate skills with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with children, families and team members.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative, flexibility and judgment when handling unpredictable situations.
- A committed team player who provides a supportive work environment for staff while providing a high quality of programming standards for children.
- Ability to work independently as well as contributes as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team.
