Sun Life Retail Advice & Solutions (RA&S) is one of Canada’s leading financial institutions that offers Canadians holistic advice and innovative solutions spanning insurance, health, and wealth through a continuum of digital-first hybrid advice, proprietary career, and independent sales channels. Within RA&S, Insurance Solutions is responsible for designing and distributing leading-edge life and health insurance products to over 2 million individual retail clients across Canada.
Reporting to the AVP, Insurance Product & Strategy, the Director, Innovation & Strategy will be responsible for driving the innovation mandate for retail insurance from strategy through to operationalization of key solutions, as well as leading the execution of strategy projects across retail insurance.
Success in this role requires critical thinkers with a passion for solving business problems and a ‘get stuff done’ mentality, effective communicators with experience working with senior leaders, and team players with strong influencing skills that love to be part of fast-paced teams and can quickly foster relationships with peers in the organization.
**What you will do?**
- ** Strategy Project Delivery **- lead execution of strategy projects across retail insurance:
- Translate ambiguous strategic issues into clearly defined problem statements
- Decompose problem statements into a set of hypotheses and potential solutions, validating through both quantitative and qualitative analyses
- Conduct and guide data collection, analysis, financial and business model development, and roadmap creation
- Synthesize findings and communicate clear recommendations and plan in a compelling storyline that facilitates productive discussion and decision making among senior executives
- ** Innovation Strategy **- define an innovation strategy and approach for prioritized Life & Health opportunities based on a deep understanding of technology trends, market direction, competitor actions, and Sun Life’s assets and strengths in the relevant space. Develop and define new business models that would allow us to generate new sources of revenue or monetize solutions in new and innovative ways.
- ** Client / Advisor Research - **leverage and champion design-thinking best practices to build creative solutions through empathy-driven, human-centered design. Lead the development and execute on of qualitative and quantitative research plans to bring forward the Voice of the Client (VOC) and Voice of the Advisor (VOA) to refine approach and proposed solutions
- ** Ideation & Pilots - **develop and champion use cases that would allow the organization to learn on key elements of the innovation strategy. Translate use cases into actionable pilots through analysis and research, execute pilots by working with stakeholders across Sun Life as well as with existing or new partners to prove/disprove various elements of our approach and inform the go-forward path.
- ** Operationalization - **work with partners across the organization to operationalize successful pilots and ensure that key aspects of the solution, including the VOC and VOA, are upheld
- ** High Performing Team **- build and lead a diverse, empowered, best-in-class team of Innovation Managers through proactive career development and continuous feedback / coaching
**What you need to succeed?**
- Minimum 5 years related experience in the financial services industry, preferably in strategy, product, or corporate finance
- Understanding of the Canadian retail insurance landscape and distribution is an asset
- ‘Get stuff done’ in a complex and challenging business environment
- Expertise in development of framework and concepts to guide organizational strategic thinking
- Strong presentation skills including story boarding, draft development, content creation, and verbal content delivery to various audiences
- Highly developed leadership and influencing capabilities, ability to effectively manage relationships across the organization to deliver against objectives
- Proven balance of analytical and creative problem-solving skills, ability to focus on the critical business issues in a data-driven and fact-based manner
- Strong quantitative skills including data interpretation, model creation, and information visualization
- Experience with client research methodologies including design thinking, survey design and executio
