**Purpose**:

Challenging the traditions of what a university campus can offer, Markham Campus will act as a unique meeting place for students to interact directly with employers, start-up companies, and community partners from across the region. The Communications Specialist (CS) will support communications and nurture initiatives for Markham Campus. Reporting to the Director, Strategic Communications, the CS will provide assistance with planning, research and writing for online and print media and nurture campaigns for recruitment and current students. The CS will also support aspects of the Markham Campus communications strategy and coordinate projects that advance the communications objectives of Markham Campus.

**Education**:
University degree in public relations, journalism, mass communications, marketing or related field or an equivalent of 4 years recent experience (defined as within the last five years) working at York University and performing the same or similar tasks. This education equivalency is in addition to the experiential requirements outlined below.

**Experience**:
Four (4) years recent related experience in media relations, journalism and/or communications. Experience in developing and executing communication plans where several clients are involved would be an asset. Previous experience in an academic/research environment would be an asset.

**Skills**:
Excellent editing, writing, research, and messaging skills.
Demonstrated experience creating and executing strategic communications plans.
Strong planning, organization, and project coordination skills, including the ability to balance multiple projects and deadlines, and proactively manage a large and constantly fluctuating workload to meet deadlines.
Commitment to maintaining high standards of quality, including meticulous attention to detail.
Demonstrated experience in using digital and social media tools.
Experience in monitoring and analyzing metrics and coverage to assess the effectiveness of communications efforts.
Team player with ability to work collaboratively, take responsibility, and ability to build positive public perception of the organization.
Sound judgement and ability to create responsive plans.
Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and ambiguous situations.
Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with a wide range of individuals across all levels of the University and with external community partners.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and be respectful of sensitive and confidential information.
Ability to interpret, implement and adhere to organizational policies and procedures.
Knowledge of the post-secondary education sector.
Knowledge of AODA and privacy legislation and other legislative requirements.
