The Wetaskiwin School Division requires a temporary full time Wellness Coach to work in schools within the City of Wetaskiwin. This is a 12 month position. The MHCB Wellness Coach provides addiction and mental health promotion and prevention to children, youth and families. Working as part of a team, this position develops and delivers developmentally appropriate evidence based programming that meets the objectives of the MHCB initiative. Delivery of programming involves classroom and small group work in schools and community settings. It focuses on increasing knowledge, building skills and fostering abilities that enables mental health, wellness and resiliency. MHCB Wellness Coaches also work with school staff, parents and community members to increase their knowledge, skills and competence related to mental health and illness.
This position requires someone who has been formally educated in the health or social sciences
field (such as health promotion and prevention, social work, nursing, early childhood development, public health, psychology) and who is knowledgeable about addiction and mental health
services.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Provides addiction and mental health promotion and prevention to children, youth and families
- Delivery of programming involves large and small group work in schools and community settings
- Assist in accessing mental health and community services
- Provide online programming and/or in person depending on COVID protocols
- Participate in collaboration with community members and organizations, while attending the Community Collaborative Network meetings
- Builds and maintains strong relationships with students and families
Preference will be given to incumbents possessing the following qualifications:
- A related post-secondary degree or diploma in social sciences, or relevant courses and experience
- Some working experience in addiction and mental health or health/human services related role preferred
- Knowledge of addiction and mental health is required
- Familiar with the developmental, educational, emotional, social and recreational needs of children, youth and families
- knowledge and understanding of Truth and Reconciliation would be an asset
- Cultural understanding of Treaty 6 Plains Cree
- Experience with delivering programming and strong public speaking
- Effective time management skills and ability to work independently
- Knowledge of the local community and resources available
- Capable of maintaining program statistics for purposes of evaluation and assisting in evaluating the effectiveness of programs
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with students, Teachers, parents/guardians
- An ability to work cooperatively as part of an educational team
- Commitment to the Health and Safety Program and training as prescribed by the Board
- Experience using emerging technologies to inform, practice and transform learning via Google Apps and other cloud based apps
- Experience using Google Suite to deliver programming
