The Museum of Natural History and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic are responsible for the collecting and recording of artifacts of cultural significance to Nova Scotia as well as promoting Nova Scotia's cultural heritage and natural landscape. This is an opportunity to work with the teams at both Halifax museums, as well as with their internal and external partners.
**About Our Opportunity**:
The Museum Buildings Supervisor’s (MBS) work involves the ongoing development of how the museums (Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and the Museum of Natural History) create welcoming, safe, secure, and operational spaces for museum staff and visitors. The MBS is mindful of every opportunity to enhance the visitor and museum team’s experiences through facility maintenance, repairs, OHS and improved accessibility. They continually assess our museum facilities, inside and out, to ensure major and minor improvement projects progress effectively and timely. Their work demonstrates a commitment to ensuring the museum facilities are safe, welcoming, and accessible for everyone. Core duties include ongoing assessment, facilitation, coordination and project management of museum facility projects and general maintenance.
This position reports to the managers of the Museum of Natural History and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, jointly.
**Primary Accountabilities**:
- As Museum Buildings Supervisor, you are responsible for ensuring museum facilities are welcoming, safe, and secure spaces for museum visitors, staff, and all users.
- Museum facilities are continually assessed for safety, security, disaster preparedness.
- Museum operations, especially gallery renovations, exhibition changes, event set up and dismantling, seasonal projects (like ship cover), and special programs are supported as much as possible.
- Museum representation in facility project meetings coordinated by Dept. or Public Works, such as facility upgrades, major repairs, abatements of hazardous materials, etc.
- Supervision and monitoring (and manage collaboratively with Public Works) contracted maintenance, including cleaning staff (overseeing schedules, performance, cleaning protocols, ensuring cleaning and custodial supplies and equipment are ordered/ maintained); waste removal; security; snow removal; parking; landscaping, etc.).
- Active member of Accessibility and JOHS committees.
- Demonstrated support of Nova Scotia Museum Green goals through ongoing efforts to develop environmentally sustainable processes and operational practices.
- Overseeing updates and refreshes to site disaster plans, storm surge plans, etc. and monitoring the supplies equipment, including accessibility of resources.
**About You**:
- You can navigate between museum operations (at two separate sites) and facility needs on an ongoing basis.
- You are mindful of best practices in museum facilities and in environmental sustainability.
- You are a problem-solver, with project management and supervisory experience.
- You have experience and knowledge performing a variety of maintenance and systems monitoring, basic repairs, project planning, addressing minor safety concerns.
- You are a team-player with leadership skills, and strong communication skills, including written and verbal.
- You understand that this position requires above average physical and visual demands re machinery, chemicals and waste materials. You may be required to lift heavy machinery and operate heavy equipment.
- You are trained to safely operate a variety of machinery and tools in a construction workshop.
- You can develop good working relationships with a wide range of clients and stakeholders, exercise diplomacy and understand diverse needs and perspectives.
- You are analytical, self-motivated, directional, and able to negotiate with others.
- You have the flexibility to work irregular hours as required.
