Southern Region is hiring one permanent and one temporary Regional Planning Ecologists within its Land Use Planning and Strategic Issues Section (LUPSI). LUPSI is the lead for land use planning and issues management within Southern Region, Regional Operations Division (ROD). ROD is responsible for the implementation and delivery of provincial land use and resource management policy and programs on local and regional levels. Southern Region has a complex planning environment, with the majority of Ontario's population in a predominantly privately-owned landscape, diverse natural resources and significant development pressures. Please Note: This position is located at 300 Water Street in Peterborough, however, alternate work arrangements may be available, based on operational feasibility.

**What can I expect to do in this role?**: In this role, you will:

- provide biological/ecological expertise and advice to the review of land use and resource management documents, broad scale or landscape level projects, development proposals, municipal planning initiatives and environmental assessment activities
- lead the development of broad scale or landscape level natural heritage planning through collaboration with internal and external teams and groups
- lead the transfer of ecological and ecosystem science and information to project teams, region wide staff and external agencies and clients
- prepare technical reports and briefing notes and make presentations on the ecological or ecosystem aspects land use and resource management plans and development proposals, including the identification of potential impacts to natural heritage values
- support the development of policies, guidelines and procedures and monitor the implementation of program and policy changes on ecological values, processes or systems

**How do I qualify?**:
**Technical expertise**:

- knowledge of Crown and municipal land use planning, resource management planning, environmental assessment, relevant legislation and related policies, principles and practices

**Analytical skills**:

- ability to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related technology for the visualization and analysis of ecological data

**Leadership and interpersonal skills**:

- ability to provide leadership and biological/ecological expertise, that contributes to the achievement of Ministry goals of natural resources management in resource management planning and land use planning
- leadership and relationship management skills to lead and support planning and task teams, and to develop and maintain effective relationships with external clients
- ability to facilitate project teams, and other groups involving agencies, non-government organizations and the public to reconcile diverse interests, build consensus and solve problems

**Communication skills**:

- demonstrated well-developed oral and written communication skills to, provide technical advice and guidance, discuss technical information and provide training
- experienced in preparing technical reports, briefing materials, and corporate correspondence

**Project management and organizational skills**:

- ability to lead and organize project teams in the development of regional natural heritage and related initiatives
- demonstrated project management skills to develop guiding documents (e.g. terms of reference), organize and assign tasks, and coordinate and monitor project work
