CUP (Community-University Partnership for the Study of Children, Youth and Families) is a research centre in the School of Public Health. For the past 20 years, CUP has employed a unique community-engaged model that values the insight and expertise of community partners, creates research grounded in community priorities, and mobilizes knowledge to inform practice, program, and policy decision-making. CUP’s model breaks down the institutional barriers between the university and the community and reduces the silos that exist between institutions, systems, and sectors. Our community-based research approach fosters innovative thinking, challenges systems, generates a new understanding of issues, and supports change. Our Steering Committee, composed of 30 individuals representing community groups, government, funding agencies, and various university faculties and departments, enhances our awareness of community issues, supports engagement with the community, and ensures diverse approaches to knowledge are central to CUP’s activities within the School of Public Health.
