**Position Summary**

In 2019, the government of Canada passed the Accessible Canada Act (ACA) into law. The ACA is accessibility legislation specific to federally regulated entities in Canada, including Canada’s over 630 First Nation communities.

The IDC / BCANDS Research position will engage, work with and incorporate directions / recommendations from identified First Nation communities across Canada, gained both in-person and virtually to examine two areas impacting accessibility within First Nations. These areas are: 1) the built environment and 2) policies. Information and data collected from the research and engagement processes will be utilized to assist in the development of standards and regulations by Accessible Standards Canada, a newly formed entity resulting from the Accessible Canada Act Legislation.

As part of a diverse team, the IDC / BCANDS Researchers will, in consultation with the Chief Executive Officer and relevant Society team members, be responsible for day-to-day activities and implementation of the research project including the coordination, identification and planning for community engagement, as COVID-19 and community guidelines allow. The IDC / BCANDS Researchers will work with communities, associated federal and provincial partners and others, documenting, tracking and reporting on of key activities, engagement and recommendations developed. The Researchers will maintain an clear understanding of the project schedule, deliverables, and commitments as well as communicate project status to all stakeholders; prepare and establish reports, briefing documents and presentations; and coordinate and schedule research-related appointments and meetings.

This research project will be guided by both an Indigenous and disability lens while conducting comprehensive examination and engagement relating to accessibility experienced by selected First Nation communities across Canada. The goal of the project is to provide recommendations and evidence based directions to directly inform the development of accessibility standards and regulations that will meet the diverse and unique accessibility needs of Canada’s First Nations communities.

**Work Performed**

The IDC / BCANDS Researchers will be responsible for day-to-day activities and implementation of the project, including, but not limited to online and in-person surveys, in-person / virtual community engagement, qualitative in-depth interviews, and comprehensive review of existing policies and procedures relating to accessibility within First Nation communities. The IDC / BCANDS Researchers will:

- Review current programs services available / regulated by the federal government, within and available to First Nation communities to analyze their overall objectives and intent, mode of delivery, accountability, and their incorporation of a First Nation disability and gender based lens;
- Conduct an environmental scan of physical accessibility barriers within selected First Nation communities across Canada, including remote, rural and urban communities, while crossing referencing the availability or limitations of current programs and services potentially available to address identified deficiencies.
- Produce accessible reports highlighting findings, barriers, gaps and recommendations to address and to inform the development of new standards / revision of existing standards.
- Expand knowledge as it relates to the Accessibility Canada Act and methods for communities to be involved with ASC and the dissemination of identified accessibility / disability resources and best practices.
- Oversee the engagement and participation of selected First Nation communities across Canada, to support project goals.
- Track project progress according to project plan, monitors and reports on the status of projects and major issues/obstacles encountered. Identifies and supports resolution to problems or barriers for successful research projects/change initiatives completion.
- In conjunction with the Chief Executive Officer Manages the project schedule(s), deliverables, and commitments as set out in project charters and other work plans. Executes project plan according to project methodologies, ensuring the successful and coordinated completion of project components.
