**THE ROLE**

Canada’s Building Trades Unions is looking for a Policy and Public Affairs Specialist to help advance our public policy agenda on behalf of our members, and for all Canadians. They will deliver data-driven, evidence-based policy recommendations - and help formulate policy working with our affiliated unions, through multilateral government bodies, and non-government fora. In addition to developing policies, the Policy & Public Affairs Specialist will help educate decision-makers on those policies - including developing communications products, briefs, and presentations to support evidence-based policymaking.

This position reports directly to the National Public Affairs Manager, with a dotted line to the Executive Director of Canada’s Building Trades Unions when advising on matters of policy. **JOB DESCRIPTION**

**Policy Analysis, Monitoring & Development (40%)**

Ø Monitoring the progress of legislation, regulations, and policy development of the Federal government, and where necessary, key provinces and municipalities.

Ø Researching and assessing policies and initiatives in the construction labour market and procurement practices by governments and private sector.

Ø Initiating or collaborating on policy initiatives related to research, innovation, workplace safety, and economic development.

Ø Contribute to policy analysis and provide advice to leadership on emerging issues.

**Policy Communications & Engagement (40%)**

Ø Directly participate in policy roundtables and government consultations to represent CBTU’s interests and advance policy initiatives at the invitation of regulators and policymakers.

Ø Develop policy communications materials including presentations, backgrounders, briefing notes, whitepapers, and studies to articulate CBTU’s positions and views.

Ø Develop quantitative and qualitative research in partnership with external agencies and analyze research findings from academic, government, and other sources.

**Government Relations (5%)**

Ø Support the Public Affairs Manager with engaging with elected officials and designated public office holders when required to brief on matters of complex policy.

**Annual Conference Support (5%)**

Ø Support CBTU’s annual conference execution, through program development and speaker invitations as part of an all-hands effort to welcome more than five hundred building trades leaders from across Canada and the United States to Ottawa.

**CANDIDATE PROFILE**

Ø You have a degree in political science, public policy, public administration, labour relations, economics, or any other applicable field, combined with three to five years of relevant experience in public policy.

Ø You have recent experience working in a complex, multi-stakeholder environments, for parliamentarians, or for the public service in a similar role.

Ø You’re an exceptional writer with strong communications skills to both formulate and write policy documents and briefs.

Ø You can work independently, take initiative, and work cooperatively with a wide range of individuals.

Ø You have intermediate French language skills, enabling you to engage with Quebec-based stakeholders and policy materials. Fluent Bilingualism is a ‘nice-to-have’.

Ø You’re located in the National Capital Region or are willing to relocate to the National Capital Region for this position.

**WORKING ENVIRONMENT**

Ø CBTU operates a hybrid office model, with operating hours between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Personnel are expected to work three days in office per week and have the option of two days per week to work remotely.

Ø CBTU may occasionally require evening or weekend work for events and special projects, although this will be rare.

Ø You may be required to travel up to 10% of the time to attend conferences, roundtables, or other functions.

Ø You will have your own office with a door, ergonomic standing desk, and robust office facilities.

**COMPENSATION AND TERMS**

**Location**:This position is hybrid. The office is located in Ottawa, ON.

**Salary and Terms**: Commensurate with experience. Permanent full-time.
