**What can I expect to do in this role?**
Under the direction of the President/CEO, the Manager, Public Affairs manages the development and implementation of government relations and civil partnerships strategies that align with the Institute's goals and objectives. They monitor government activities and identify potential issues that may impact our members. The Manager, Public Affairs builds and maintains strong relationships with government officials and stakeholders at the local, provincial, and federal levels to facilitate and coordinate high-level meetings with senior members of parliament and prepare briefing notes for such meetings. They provide timely analysis and advice on government policy developments to senior management and union leadership.
**Primary responsibilities**:
- Manage the development and implementation of government relations strategies that align with the Institute's goals and objectives. Monitor government activities and identify potential issues that may impact our members.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with government officials and stakeholders at the local, provincial, and federal levels. Facilitate and coordinate high-level meetings with senior members of parliament and prepare briefing notes for such meetings.
- Engage and develop productive relationships with civil society partnerships aligned with Institute values such as the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, the Broadbent Institute, etc. to promote the Institute and its members to achieve common goals. - Provide timely analysis and advice on government policy developments to senior management and union leadership. Track and report on legislative and regulatory activities that impact our members.
- Partner with internal stakeholders to develop and communicate the Institute's position on key relations and advocacy issues and to receive feedback from stakeholders on these initiatives.
- Represent the Institute in meetings and discussions with government officials and other stakeholders.
- Develop and manage a calendar of initiatives for advocacy, including but not limited to strategic, member-driven portfolios related to government action or authority.
- Identify and manage the research and analysis to support government relations initiatives. Develop and maintain a comprehensive database of government officials and stakeholders.
- Develop and implement materials that inform members about the Institute’s advocacy activities and advances.
- Develop and recommend for approval budgetary and expenditure proposals; approve regular office expenditures based on delegated authorities. Review and approve expense claims and expenditure invoices.
- Maintain quality control and on-time delivery or all assigned projects and commitments.
- Participate in multi-disciplinary teams assigned to special projects and work collaboratively with other staff.
- May be requested to undertake other related duties on a periodic basis.
**Knowledge and Experience Requirements**
**Education**:
- Completion of a university degree in political science or labour relations
- Five (5) to eight (8) years’ of experience in government relations, public affairs, public policy, or a related field, with a focus on advocating for workers' rights and advancing labor issues in a public forum, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
**Language requirement**:
- Fluency in both official languages (French and English) is **required**
**Knowledge and experience required**:
- Experience in the management and execution of strategic plans and operational plans focusing on advocating for workers’ rights and advancing labour issues
