NRC Automotive and Surface Transportation (AST) Research Centre has the mandate to advance product and process technologies for producing more fuel-efficient, affordable and environmentally-responsible ground vehicles, and to deliver engineering solutions to complex technology challenges facing today’s surface transportation industries including automotive, heavy and specialized vehicles and rail.
- The work will focus on heavy-duty vehicles and vocational fleets, as well as contextualizing research for the Canadian environment. Some high-level examples of projects include:
- Development of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and test plans for the evaluation of electric Vehicle (eV) performances.
- Reviewing, evaluating, and assisting in the development of new technologies and procceses for improving the performance or understanding of eVs.

Duties and responsibilities will include:
- Author, review, and critique research plans, detailed work plans, technical reports, and technical papers.
- Assist in the development of research proposals including collaboration with external partners.
- Interpret and analyze data/results and develop robust conclusions and recommendations.
- Research and assist in the composition of literature reviews.
- Present research findings in technical forums including conferences, seminars, working groups, etc.

**Education**:
As part of the RA Program you must have received your Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Engineering/ Science, sur as Electrical, automotive, mechatronics, mechanical, or other related engineering background, within the last five years or you expect to receive the degree within the next six months.

**Experience**:

- Significant experience performing data interpretation/research analysis.
- Experience working in transportation, vehicle electrification, and/or vehicle charging systems.
- Experience in conceiving, initiating, leading and executing research projects.
- Experience in writing conference and/or journal papers.

Assets:

- Experience with multidomain system modeling tools such as Simulink, Maplesim, Modelica, or others.

**Technical Competencies**:

- Knowledge in at least two of the following areas:

- Control system design, particularly relating to hybrid powertrain and battery management system design.
- Hydrogen fuel cells, batteries, electric motors, and other automotive (and specifically eV) subsystems.
- Multidomain simulation tools (Simulink, Maplesim, etc.).
- The Canadian electrical grid and its relevance to transportation electrification.
- Vehicle communications and relevant protocals such as CAN bus, and SAE J1939.
- Solid understanding of thermodynamics, electrodynamics, and the physics of vehicle dynamics.
- Knowledge of Python, C++, R, or similar programming languages for the manipulation and analysis of data.

**Compensation**:
The intent of this hiring action is to staff through the Research Associate (RA) Program at the AsRO level, which is an early-career level position with a salary range of $74,230 to $103,093.
