Reporting to the Manager of Health and Safety, the Chemical and Laboratory Safety Advisor functions as a key member of the Health and Safety team. The Chemical and Laboratory Safety Advisor is responsible for providing strategic support and guidance for specific University hazardous materials safety policies, programs, plans, and procedures. Primary responsibilities and programs include chemical safety, laboratory safety, laser safety, radiation safety, research safety, risk assessment, and hazardous waste. This position works closely with the Biological Safety Advisor to assist faculties and units who conduct activities involving biological and radioactive materials.

The Chemical and Laboratory Safety Advisor role requires an individual who possesses strong analytical and interpersonal skills in order to carry out its primary responsibilities with a diverse set of stakeholders, and on a diverse set of technical topics.

**What You’ll Do**:

- Explore, manage, and maintain chemical safety programs and systems, such as Vertere, the University hazardous materials database, or ChemWatch, the University hazardous material safety data sheet database.
- Provide training and consultation on their use and manage updates and troubleshooting of the systems;
- Develop, deliver, and consult on safety training for faculty, students and staff. Ensure training is adequate and current;
- Support and advise faculty, staff, and students on chemical waste packaging, transporting, labeling, and handling. Coordinate hazardous materials disposals as the liaison between the UofR and the hazardous materials disposal contract holder;
- Assist in commissioning of new labs, and with decommissioning of old labs;
- Lead the Hazardous Materials Spill Response Team, provide spill response training;
- Consult with faculty, students, and staff on chemical safety related questions. Provide plans for safe chemical use, waste management, proper chemical storage, and new experiment planning;
- Assist various stakeholders with implementation of a robust system of risk assessment for both overarching research projects, and specific experiments or tasks.
- Assist stake holders in the creation of Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs) for their activities;
- Ensure compliance with TDG, WHMIS/GHS legislation by working with stakeholders who use hazardous materials;
- Act in the role of Alternate Radiation Safety Officer.
- Develop, administer, and maintain a Laser Safety Program and applicable policy that is compliant with all relevant acts, regulations, and standards. Hold the title of Laser Safety Officer (LSO), evaluate and control laser hazards, implement control measures, and monitor and enforce compliance with required standards and regulations;

Position Requirements

**What You’ll Bring to this Position**:

- A Graduate degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry is preferred, however a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry will be considered;
- Three or more years of chemistry/biochemistry research-related laboratory or work experience;
- Three or more years of experience in chemical safety in an academic or research environment;
- Laser Safety Officer (LSO) certification is an asset;
- Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) certification is an asset;
