POSITION FUNCTION

The position of Manager, NITEP (Indigenous Teacher Education Program) & Indigenous Education, within the Office of Indigenous Education (OIE) in the Faculty of Education, provides administrative and operational management of NITEP and OIE. This position manages the administrative and staffing aspects of the academic graduate and undergraduate programs administered/coordinated by OIE and/or NITEP and the new and growing initiatives, with the goal to meet the mandate of “increasing the number of certified Aboriginal Teachers and providing a grounded Aboriginal philosophy in all areas of support for NITEP students”. This position is responsible for OIE and NITEP’s day-to-day office administration, including communication, finances, human resources and facilities. Under the leadership of the Director of NITEP, this position manages the NITEP field center offices, both on-campus and off-campus. The Manger, NITEP and Indigenous Education, provides administrative and operational expertise to the Associate Dean, Indigenous Education, and the Director of NITEP (both of who are tenure stream faculty members and academic leaders) in a cooperative environment.

Every year, the Faculty of Education enrolls about 50 indigenous graduate students through our various PhD and MA/MEd programs and 120 undergraduate students through NITEP. In addition, OIE recently launched a Master of Indigenous Education program with a cohort enrollment of 45 - 50 students each year. A new EdD cohort in Indigenous Education is being prepared and will be launched in the near future. NITEP currently operates in three locations in BC including UBC Point Grey Campus, Bella Coola and Okanagan. NITEP projects an offering a Field Centre in Northern B.C in 2023.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The Manager, NITEP and Indigenous Education, reports to the Director of NITEP, administratively, and works closely with both the Associate Dean, Indigenous Education, the Director of NITEP, and Director, Indigenous Programs and Engagement. Takes directions from the Director of NITEP on NITEP and undergraduate associated activities, and from the Associate Dean, Indigenous Education, on OIE related matters including Human Resources and Communications. The Manager, NITEP and Indigenous Education, works closely with UBC Aboriginal programs: First Nations House of Learning, Xwi7xwa Library, faculty-based Aboriginal coordinators and advisors, and other committees as assigned by the Associate Dean. This position liaises and works collaboratively with the Teacher Education Office, Faculty of Education Departments and administrative units, Enrolment Services and Registrar, Deans, Directors and Unit Heads of University faculties, departments, schools and institutes and Indigenous communities of existing and projected field centres.

WORK PERFORMED

Program Administration and Communications:

- Provides strategic management for OIE and NITEP that are related to Indigenous undergraduate academic programs, undergraduate and graduate student services, communications including social media, and cultural protocols/supports.
- Facilitates linkages and communications between OIE and NITEP and other programs and units in the Faculty and in the University.
- Manages the SAGE program - Supporting Aboriginal Graduate Enhancement Program - which is a Province-wide, inter-institutional, peer/faculty Indigenous students mentoring program led by the Associate Dean, Indigenous Education, by organizing and coordinating SAGE-supported activities and events, and hiring and mentoring students. These events include regular meetings, identifying and bringing in speakers, and securing mentoring opportunities for SAGE students. In addition, we want to give an opportunity to SAGE students to mentor NITEP students in the Vancouver campus and field centres.
