Job Summary


As an Educator, this position will work towards prevention education strategies that promote a culture of consent by addressing attitudes and behaviours that support rape culture to create an inclusive environment for diverse populations of UBC faculty, staff, and students.

This position is jointly responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating sexual violence prevention education and training initiatives that support the successful implementation of UBC's Policy SC17, The Sexual Misconduct Policy.

Additionally, the Indigenous Educator provides leadership in the development of organizational change strategies and the implementation of initiatives that represent Indigenous perspectives in sexual violence response and prevention programs.

The incumbent works from an intersectional trauma-informed perspective to address the overlapping and ongoing impact of sexual violence and colonization in Indigenous communities.

This position will identify and foster relationships with key partners across campus and locally including Indigenous communities and organizations as well as other institutions.

Organizational Status


The Indigenous Educator reports to the Director of the Sexual Violence Prevention & Response Office and works collaboratively as a member of a team of professionals.

The position plays an integral role in the development and implementation of education and training initiatives that support the successful implementation of UBC's Sexual Misconduct Policy, SC17.

Work Performed

  • Develops and implements UBC's Sexual Violence Response and Prevention Education Plan.
  • Develops evaluation and research projects focusing on the educational needs of Indigenous students, program efficacy, and learning environments.
  • Works with key stakeholders and relevant departments to provide education to the UBC community on issues related to the person who experienced harm, individuals who have caused harm, sexual assault, policy/procedures and best practices for supporting Indigenous survivors of sexual assault.
  • As requested, develops, supports, encourages, and promotes provincial, national and international programs relevant to the position and to postsecondary access in conjunction with other postsecondary educational institutions, offcampus agencies, and government departments.
  • Evaluates relevant policies, programs and services, and recommends improvements.
  • Develops and implements SVPRO's comprehensive education and training plan for the UBC Community on the topic of sexual violence with a focus on the intersection of all other types of oppression, to be offered in cooperation with UBC faculty, staff, students, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Provides education and training about sexual violence and related issues including UBC's Sexual Misconduct Policy (SC17) and its possible overlap with other relevant policies including, Policy SC7, Discrimination and Harassment, and SC13, Response to At-Risk Behaviour.
  • Provides education and training related to new issues arising in the field of sexual violence response and prevention to individuals, units, and departments involved in responding to disclosures of sexual violence.
  • Coordinates educational programs, projects, and special events related to sexual violence prevention.
  • Develops and implements strategies, processes, plans, and programs that promote evidencebased approaches to sexual violence response and prevention education, potentially drawing from research in other areas that will allow for a greater understanding of how to provide relevant, respectful programming for Indigenous students, faculty, and staff.
  • May participate in the recruitment, training, and support of peerled prevention education and training.
  • Consults and collaborates with individuals, community groups, professional organizations, postsecondary educational institutions, government, and other partners to develop and deliver postsecondary education on sexual violence response and prevention.
