**Indigenous Initiatives Coordinator**:
**Primary Purpose**: To respond to the needs of current and prospective Indigenous graduate students by developing resources and building peer networking and professional development opportunities in a culturally safe environment. Support central recruitment efforts of Indigenous graduate students. Support CGPS development of an Indigenous strategy, including Decolonization.

**Nature of Work**: Reporting to the Executive Officer, College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, the Indigenous Initiatives Coordinator is a key contact for Indigenous graduate students at the University of Saskatchewan. The Indigenous Initiatives Coordinator is responsible for developing, coordinating, supervising, and evaluating student support programs and services both independently, and in conjunction with other colleagues and departments, for Indigenous (First Nations, Metis, and Inuit) USask graduate students and serves as an ambassador of Indigenous graduate student initiatives for the College of Graduate &Postdoctoral Studies.

**Project Work**: The successful applicant will plan, develop a schedule, various initiatives to meet targets and manage risk both independently and collaboratively which may include:

- Engage with Indigenous graduate students to co-create the development of recommendations and implementation plans for mentoring networks including peer mentoring and an Alumni network.
- Work with CGPS’ communications team and various campus and external partners to develop communication methodologies to meet the needs of current and prospective Indigenous graduate students including the development and facilitation of initiatives that contribute to Indigenous graduate students’ educational journey.
- Support central recruitment activities including creating opportunities to engage undergraduate students and connecting them to graduate students as advisors, mentors, and alumni.
- Develop opportunities for Indigenous graduate student community building.

**Accountabilities**:

- As the point of first contact for Indigenous graduate students, the work requires innovative thinking, excellent judgment, and the ability to manage sensitive situations with a strong commitment to creating exceptional experiences for Indigenous graduate students.
- Relationship building is central to the role across campus with attention to the stakeholders within the Oyateki Partnership, the Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Centre staff, GSA Vice President Indigenous Engagement, the office of the Vice-Provost Indigenous Engagement team, and staff and faculty from across the academy.
- As imperatives, the incumbent will understand and practice appropriate protocol while working with Elders and knowledge keepers and can engage these respected community members as a supportive pathway for Indigenous graduate students.
- The coordinator has a high degree of independence and will be required at times to work under pressure to ensure deadlines are met.
- Provide recommendations to the Dean’s leadership team on decolonization of CGPS structures, policies, and procedures.
- Support the selection and nomination processes for Indigenous Achievement Week awards for graduate students, and adjudication processes for the Indigenous Graduate Leadership Award and Queen Elizabeth II Aboriginal scholarships.

**Qualifications**: An Indigenous person (First Nation, Inuit, or Metis). The successful applicant is required to submit verification following the University of Saskatchewan’s **deybwewin | taapwaywin | tapwewin policy**. A graduate degree in humanities and/or social sciences and the ability to speak an Indigenous language are considered assets. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

**Experience**: Three to five years of relatable experience, preferably in a university setting. Experience in program design, program evaluation, student advising, and project management are desirable.

**Skills**:

- ** **Must have knowledge of Indigenous Ways of Knowing, Indigenous research methodologies, and understand the importance of building strong and caring relationships with Indigenous communities.
- The ability to gather and synthesize information from a variety of sources and generate recommendations and reports; ability to set priorities while achieving goals and objectives in an appropriate time frame; strong communication skills, both written and verbal; and demonstrated relationship-building skills.
- Understanding of the graduate student experience and appreciation for the diversity of disciplines within the institution. Knowledge of CGPS and university policies, procedures, and decision-making processes is an asset. Proficiency working in Microsoft Office 365.
