**The Opportunity**:
Reporting to the Vice-President, Regulatory Affairs, Policy and Corporate Events of the Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA), the Director, Regulatory Affairs, will take the lead in understanding our members’ regulatory issues and foresee what actions need to be taken. The role requires someone to be comfortable working independently with little oversight, a self-starter who takes initiative and thrives in a collaborative team environment. The incumbent will conduct regulatory research on multiple concurrent projects, analyze federal and provincial policies, regulations and legislation, work with external experts, member organization representatives, and stakeholders on projects/programs, and provide recommendations on various regulatory issues.
The Director, Regulatory Affairs will liaise with internal CNA staff, senior officials within our membership, government officials and other external stakeholders in the execution of regulatory requirements. The individual in this role proposes and conducts research on regulatory matters, works with consultants on the formulation of regulatory advice, presents options and recommendations, and anticipates emerging issues, trends and problems that may affect the nuclear sector and CNA’s members. The position also requires the ability to produce briefing materials for the CNA management including the Vice President, Regulatory Affairs, Policy and Corporate Events, and the President/CEO, and various committees, prepare regulatory hearing materials, and may act as a spokesperson for regulatory meetings, hearings or conference sessions.
A key responsibility is to manage the CNA’s Regulatory Affairs Advisory Council (RAAC) which is composed of CNA members with an interest in regulatory matters. This role requires an exceptional level of ability to facilitate and coordinate members with the objective of finding alignment on issues. The council’s work is primarily related to license renewals, regulatory document reviews, participation in regulatory hearings, but may also include any other issues that are of concern to CNA members and to the nuclear industry in general.
- Prepare materials in support of Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) Committee hearings and other presentations (e.g., written submissions, Qs and As, speaking notes, etc.).
- Collaborate with other industry associations in the development and alignment of positions on regulatory issues.
- Keep track of and collate all information on recent updates on federal and provincial regulatory affairs developments.
- Review/compile background information, or data, on specified regulatory issues and write, edit, and review regulatory updates, position papers, correspondence, and submissions on new regulatory developments.
- Identify, develop and maintain key strategic relationships with governments (elected officials and departmental officials) and key stakeholders, including indigenous peoples.
- Proactively facilitate and enhance strategic government contact that includes regulatory support.
- Identify research needs, including key objectives, scope, costs, stakeholders to involve and development of a research implementation plan.
- Complete research assignments as directed by the Vice President, Regulatory Affairs, Policy and Corporate Events, including proactively proposing research topics based on the ongoing and future issues/trends of CNA members, with input from other CNA team members.

**Knowledge & Skills Required**:

- An undergraduate degree in engineering, law, public administration, environmental science, political science, economics, or another relevant discipline is required.
- Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant and progressive experience in a field related to nuclear power operations, environment, energy, or economics in operations, regulatory and/or a legislative environment.
- Knowledge of executive and management development strategies, models and operation.
- Considerable experience preparing briefing materials and/or briefing senior leadership including members of Boards of Directors, or committee members.
