As a social service provider, within the city of Nanaimo (BC), the New Hope Centre provides services to individuals looking to make a positive change in their life. Each day, staff provide compassionate care to Nanaimo's marginalized community struggling with poverty, homelessness and addiction. The New Hope Centre is a multifunctioning facility committed to providing a safe space where humans can heal and reconcile. The Shelter Worker provides a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors.
The New Hope Centre services provide support to individuals transitioning and reintegrating from Correctional Institutions to community, as well as individuals experiencing homelessness/poverty, and those at risk of homelessness/ poverty, and individuals struggling with addiction & mental health challenges.
This position reports to the Program Manager. This position is full time and based out of our Nanaimo facility. This is not a remote position.
**Hours**:
15 hours per week
**Schedule**: Saturday and Sunday - 7 am - 3 pm
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:
Monitors the activities of the clients/residents and maintains availability for personal, practical and morale support; may include providing safe storage and recording of prescribed medications
Accurately records day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods; maintains logbooks and completes occurrence reports
Liaises external agencies as needed (e.g. police, urgent situations)
Coordinates client care relating to security issues; may be directly involved doing bed checks, room/personal searches
May carry out inspection/security checks of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures
Handles the admission, orientation and evaluation of clients' understanding of rules; ensures ongoing enforcement of policies, which may include client discipline
May handle finances relating to room rentals and meal tickets, and receipting of same
May serve as receptionist for Shelter
May prepare or provide simple meals for clients/residents
Performs other duties as assigned
**QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS**:
Highschool Diploma required.
More than three months but less than one year of prior related experience, including, experience with frontline work in a social service
Comprehensive knowledge of current social issues related to homelessness, mental illness and drug addiction is essential
**Physical requirement**:
The performance of the job requires the applicant to stand for various periods of time, walk multiple flights of stairs and occasionally lift objects not exceeding 30 lbs.
**Work environment**:
The incumbent's work environment is typically in a shelter and/or in treatment facilities.
The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

Abusive people
Verbal abuse
Isolation
Work schedule affecting lifestyle
The incumbent may have little to no travel required.
Background check consent.
A clear vulnerable sector
Federal Government "Enhanced Reliability" Security clearance.
A clean drivers abstract.
Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety
