This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, this position offers a comprehensive benefits package found on our Benefits Overview page and an annual salary range of $87,013 to $119,644. This position has an initial appointment of 1 year plus a day.

**Location**

This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person, with onsite work primarily taking place at North Campus Edmonton.

**Position** **Summary**

The University of Alberta and the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) have developed a research partnership. This long-term initiative positions Alberta as a world leader in the field of biodiversity monitoring and research. Designed to track and understand changes in biodiversity throughout Alberta, this initiative provides Albertans with the ability to make informed decisions about the state of their environment in ways previously not possible. The Institute operates using a distributed delivery model involving the following partner organizations: University of Alberta, University of Calgary, and InnoTech Alberta.

Reporting to the ABMI’s Executive Director, the Imaging Centre Director is a member of the ABMI Management Team and responsible for implementing the mandate of the Imaging Centre. The Imaging Centre’s primary goal is to generate high-quality, high-resolution geospatial data products such as airborne lidar and optical imagery.

The Director leads and manages a globally significant group of technologists, programmers, developers, and scientists. Further, the Director is responsible for overseeing the collection of new high-resolution airborne geospatial data at a provincial scale. The Director is responsible for improving natural resource management activities in Canada through the creation of consistent and unique scientific capacity that is foundational to practical, real-world issues. To accomplish this, the Director facilitates and manages effective relationships with researchers and scientists across the spectrum of natural resource management including government, Indigenous communities, agriculture industry, forest industry, energy industry, and the environmental community. This includes facilitating the creation of high-resolution geospatial data that will be applied to environmental challenges including restoration, reclamation, climate change, species-at-risk management, land use mapping, and provincial/territorial planning.

**Duties**

The Imaging Centre Director provides leadership to the Imaging Centre and is responsible for managing several diverse business areas. The Responsibilities of the position include:
1. Management
- Provides financial oversight and control of the Imaging Centre.
- Determines resources (fiscal and human) and undertakes work planning for the Imaging Centre.

2. Research and development
- Plans and oversees the development of the research program including the design and implementation of solutions to operational challenges.
- Makes continuous improvements to Imaging Centre services, programs, or operations to increase performance and deliver results.
- Develops, validates, and where necessary improves the products and services used to support biodiversity monitoring in Canada. This includes the implementation of machine learning models and collaborations on software development.

3. Leadership
- Leads a diverse group of support staff including GIS analysts and technicians, computer scientists, and computer engineers some of which specialize in artificial intelligence.
- Establishes clear performance expectations with staff, other Centres in the ABMI, and collaborators.
- Creates an environment where diverse ideas, perspectives, and achievements are recognized, rewarded, and celebrated.
