The work requires the incumbent to be familiar with language learners, language benchmarks, a range of technology supports, and Universal Design for Learning strategies in the classroom. To perform the work, the incumbent must be fluent in written and spoken English. The incumbent works within the classroom environment with a team, consisting of teachers, administrators, English as an Additional Language designates, Learning Coaches, consultants, parents, staff, and multi-disciplinary team (MDT) members.

**Responsibilities**:

- Plan and implement programs/strategies with specific students or groups of students, as identified by EAL benchmarks
- Plan and implement scaffolded instructional plans and activities in the classroom that support the language development of English Language Learners
- Develop and modify instructional materials and activities that will allow students to access academic content at their language level and take into consideration the age and benchmark level of students
- Incorporate games, formal exercises, and literature into instruction
- Provide small group classroom instruction to support the teacher in curriculum delivery
- Support English Language Learners in completing lessons, assignments, projects or activities
- Work with students to improve language skills and overall learning using Alberta 2.0 EAL Benchmarks
- Build positive relationships with students by providing meaningful and current instruction
- Provide students with clear expectations and feedback in their language development
- Assist in administering informal/formal screening tools to determine language benchmark levels
- Gather evidence of learning for student benchmarking
- Model/discuss strategies and supports as appropriate with the classroom team, and manager and EAL consultants
- Collaborate with consultants, managers, and school staff to implement strategies, including technology support, to improve learning
- Collaborate with educational teams to discuss student work, share best practices, and support student mastery of standards
- Participate in cohort preparation time and meetings

**Qualifications**
- Diploma in an area related to child development, education, or foreign language education, plus three years of related experience
- Fluency in English, both written and oral, is essential
- Training and experience working with specific age groups is an asset (i.e. Kindergarten to Grade 6, Grades 7-12)
- Fluency in an additional language is an asset (Tagalog, Malayalam, Amharic, Vietnamese, Spanish, and Tigrinya, in particular)
- Knowledge of Alberta Education system in general and Language programming in particular
- Knowledge of Microsoft programs including Excel, Outlook, and databases
- Knowledge of program planning, presentation, instructional and project management techniques and principles
- Knowledge of safe workplace and an understanding of Occupational Health and Safety regulations
- Understanding of the provincial curriculum, EAL Benchmarking, and language acquisition strategies
- General knowledge of the Division, department, and school programs and operations
- Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong presentation skills with the ability to develop and deliver instructional material
- Strong leadership, mentoring, and coaching skills
- Strong teamwork skills with the ability to work in partnership with the teacher to plan and implement instructional activities
- Strong organizational skills are required to coordinate the many aspects of the work
- Strong planning, problem-solving, and analytical skills
- Strong time management skills and the ability to manage conflicting priorities
- Ability to build and maintain rapport and trust with students
