We are seeking two highly qualified postdoctoral researchers to join the “Carbon Credits and Renewable Energy in India” research project at The University of Winnipeg. The project involves analyzing the policy framework governing carbon credits and renewable energy in India and supporting opportunities for communities in Gujarat and Karnataka to help advance the green transition. Specifically, the project will examine the proposed national carbon credit trading scheme, the efficacy of involvement in the global voluntary carbon market, and national and state incentive mechanisms for production of renewable energy. The project will also explore opportunities for enhancing local communities' knowledge and skills to participate effectively in state-promoted projects and to establish their own energy and carbon credit projects.

**Responsibilities**:

- Work in a collaborative team environment, under the general direction of Drs. Kirit Patel and Alan Diduck to achieve the goals of associated research grant funding requirements.
- Conduct high-level academic literature reviews and associated writing tasks.
- Analyze key policies, laws, project approvals, and license conditions related to carbon trading, renewable energy, and incentives for climate mitigation projects.
- Conduct interviews with stakeholders including policymakers, legal experts, and community members to gather further insights on the implementation and impact of these policies, laws, and incentives.
- Observe community deliberations, engagement with project developers, and participation in decision-making spaces, including policy forums, public hearings, and compliance procedures.
- Prepare case studies of specific carbon credit projects and green energy initiatives in Karnataka and Gujarat to describe the projects and evaluate their effectiveness and impacts.
- Supervise community-based research assistants and students working at the master’s level.
- Contribute to academic and popular publications related to project research.
- Other duties, as assigned.

**Qualifications**:
Required Qualifications (all of the following):

- Ph.D. in environmental studies, environmental science, rural development, or a related field, and have expertise in policy analysis and community development
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, Hindi and Gujarati, or English, Hindi and Kannada
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage time effectively and efficiently to meet deadlines
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work as part of a team
- Excellent knowledge of Indian policies, environmental laws and enforcement institutions, project approvals, and license conditions related to carbon trading, renewable energy, and incentives for climate mitigation projects
- Extensive experience with environmental action research or environmental community-engaged research in Karnataka or Gujarat

Desired Qualifications (one or more of the following):

- Experience with supervising community-based research assistants and university students
- Experience with disseminating research results at academic conferences and in community-focused venues
- Experience with facilitating small group meetings and workshops
- Experience working with digital image and remote sensing data
