The Office of medical learner affairs is dedicated to supporting learners throughout their medical student and resident training by creating, promoting, and sustaining a culture of wellness and resilience within the academic and clinical learning environments. Based on an accreditation standard of the medical school, the office provides a safe and confidential venue to seek out resources that protect and enhance the learners' health and well-being with the objective of working together to create a healthy learning environment.

The mission of the Office of medical learner affairs is to provide medical students and residents learners with counselling services, support groups and workshops to facilitate the development of skills and strategies to navigate through a critical and demanding point in their lives. The Office of medical learner affairs also develops and implements an academic curriculum that promotes wellness for psychological, academic, physical and financial well-being.

Under the supervision of the Assistant Dean, Student Affairs, the Wellness Consultant provides expert short-term clinical counselling services to learners in Undergraduate Medical Education at the Montreal and Outaouais campuses. The consultant also supports the residents in Outaouais. Although Wellness Consultants are assigned to particular medical students and residents’ programs in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, at times they may be asked to support other programs or sites when there are surges in activity or leaves/absences.

Term: Maternity Leave Replacement, 1 year non-renewable

Time Type: Full time

Primary Responsibilities

Counselling and Case Management (60 70%)
- Conduct clinical assessments and provide one on one short term counselling to learners who are in distress or seeking support.
- Maintain all necessary clinical documentation, including intake forms, consent forms, assessment forms, progress notes, and any other documentation in a private secure electronic folder.
- Organize and facilitate support groups such as Ice Cream Rounds / Experiential Rounds / Wellness Rounds.
- With the direction of the Assistant Dean, determine the need for intervention in the event of an emerging crisis, conduct suicide assessments and interventions, and facilitate urgent and non urgent recommendations. If necessary, launch the Office of medical learner affairs crisis management protocol.
- Offer ad hoc support groups as needed following an event or crisis (e.g., COVID 19, CaRMS, death of a learner, intimidation and harassment).
- Maintain communication with the Associate Deans about situations that require medium or long term leaves as per established practice in each unit.
- Act as an intermediary for further care; collaborate with referral sources to simplify learner access to long term counselling services in the community, if deemed necessary, or other support services at the University (e.g., healthcare team at the Wellness Hub, OSD, ORE, OSVRSE, MORSL etc.)
- Maintain up to date and comprehensive information on student services and resources across campus, as well as community based mental health services that meet diverse needs of learners.
- Act as a confidential resource to program directors and staff with questions or concerns about trainees in need.
- Ensure that practice is up to date and informed by current best practices. Participate in professional development opportunities.
- There will be up to the equivalent of half a day per week dedicated to in-person activities for Campus Outaouais PGME students (residents). If there are requests for Med-P counselling sessions, the time dedicated to these sessions should be approved by the Assistant dean student affairs.

Prevention and Innovation (15 25%)

Prevention and Innovation strategies are led by the Office of medical learner affairs Assistant Deans of the respective medical students and residents programs. The Wellness Consultants work collaboratively with their Assistant Deans to develop and deliver prevention and innovation initiatives in the following ways:

- Work with the Assistant Deans on the development of the wellness curriculum of their respective units: contribute expert knowledge of the psychological and wellness needs of medical students and residents and evidence based practices to support and enhance their well being.
- Contribute to the design and delivery of workshops in the wellness curriculum and presentations that meet learner wellness needs and accreditation standards.
- Provide other outreach initiatives requested by Faculty or student representatives (e.g., ASIST training, Mediation Sessions, Experiential Rounds, various workshops)
- Work with the Assistant Deans to develop evaluation tools f
