**Garden and Grounds Assistant**

**Summary**:
Reporting to the Curator Director and liaising with the Gardens and Grounds Coordinator, the Garden and Grounds Assistant supports Eldon House in its goal to be a prime destination for patrons interested in gardens, grounds, and programming at London’s oldest home and heritage museum. Eldon House employs one Garden and Grounds Assistant, who works together with staff and volunteers to ensure patrons enjoy a pleasant onsite experience.

**Key Objectives**:

- Liaise with the Garden and Grounds Coordinator (or designate) for assignments and guidance.
- Plant seeds and seedlings, grow plants ready for planting, and carry out all garden maintenance, with the help of volunteers.
- Operate a lawn mower, liner trimmer, blower, gardening tools and shovels, as required.
- Hone understanding of heritage gardens, planting, and pruning, and day-to-day maintenance of the grounds and gardens.
- Undertake greenhouse care, garden planning, tree care, and irrigation.
- Gain theoretical knowledge of the museum’s heritage site and gardens.
- Perform other related duties, as assigned.

**Qualifications**:

- A Canadian citizen.
- Between the ages of 15-30.
- Experience developing and maintaining gardens, growing plants from seeds/cuttings, greenhouse procedures and maintenance of lawn equipment.
- Experience with lawn equipment including mowers, trimmers, and hedgers preferred.
- Self-motivated with capacity to work independently and collaboratively.
- Self-motivated with ability to communicate effectively with customers and co-workers.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and time management skills.
- Training in a horticultural technician, grounds maintenance or landscape design program an asset.
- Digital and social media skills preferred.
- Familiarity with Workplace Hazardous Material Information Systems (WHMIS) an asset.
- Proof of vaccination, or valid exemption is required.

**Dimensions**:
This part-time position is a Canada Summer Jobs project funded through Service Canada and is part of the CUPE bargaining unit. It is a 30-hour workweek, running 5 days a week, Monday-Friday, between the hours varying. This summer position operates from June 12 to August 27, 2023.
