**Nuclear Research and Operations at McMaster**

At McMaster, our research strength is one of our most prized assets. We are home to some of the best minds and laboratories in the country, with research income and output rivalling those of universities more than twice our size.

A defining and differentiating characteristic of McMaster is its nuclear profile. With nuclear education and research activities spanning several faculties and a suite of five nuclear facilities, with the largest research reactor in Canada and one of the largest university based reactors in the world at its heart, McMaster has an unparalleled reputation and capabilities in this area. Major accomplishments in medical isotope production, radiopharmaceutical research and the creation of spinout companies from the hosted Centre for Probe Development and Commercialization, and major CFI awards to create a new Canadian Neutron Beam Lab in the McMaster Nuclear Reactor are recent examples of McMaster’s impact in the nuclear profile. McMaster is a significant player on the national stage for Canada’s nuclear future and is increasingly in a position of leadership with respect to the Canadian academic sector’s role in achieving Net Zero 2050.

Strengthening our Nuclear research profile has been identified as a strategic priority by the President and Vice-President’s in recent years. A critical success factor to this effort is to increase the research user base and scientific impact of the facilities while building outreach and integration to the University’s academic programs. In addition, broad outreach in the community, including with Indigenous communities and partners, will be critical to the support of licensing activities and realizing the aspirations of the nuclear enterprise to contribute to building a workforce for Canada’s nuclear future that is diverse and inclusive.

Job Summary:
Reporting to the Director, Research and Education Support in Nuclear Operations and Facilities, the Manager, Nuclear Outreach and Education (NOE) will have responsibility to design, develop and lead programs to ensure a best in class user experience for researcher users at McMaster’s nuclear facilities - a necessary element of our growth to capture our standing and attract funding as a major national science facility in Canada. They will lead an effort to significantly increase our outreach program, serving our local, national and indigenous communities with information to support decision making on McMaster and other nuclear activities. They will spearhead our program to greatly increase the integration of McMaster’s nuclear facilities into our undergraduate and graduate education programs and into the programs of our partners like Mohawk College.

The Manager NOE will be the face and voice of our facilities with the public, media and scientific community with regard to our outreach and research activities and will be a key contributor to the reputation and profile of McMaster as Canada’s Nuclear University.

The Manager NOE will have the following key accountabilities:

- Design, establish and manage a best in class User Experience Office to attract and facilitate access for a growing cadre of Canadian and international research users at the University’s nuclear facilities, ensuring a program that supports growth of the research mandate as a major facility of national significance and captures and promotes the research impact of the facilities in support of the pursuit of funding opportunities.
- Recruit interdisciplinary research partners from McMaster and other institutions and industry (local, national, and international)
- Liaise between visiting researchers and facility staff (Reactor Beamlines, Radioisotopes, CANS, NAA, Accelerators, etc.)
- Conduct primary and secondary research on new program concepts to determine potential fit, and viability.
- Troubleshoot problems at all stages of research development and implementation.
- Identify funding opportunities and coordinate the submission of research proposals.
- Develop, design, implement, and maintain processes to assess submitted research proposals for technical feasibility and scientific merit to award user time
- Develop, design, implement, and maintain processes and methods to manage, monitor and measure NOF User Experiences
- Coordinate the activities of research staff and resources to ensure that projects progress in accordance with predetermined protocols, budgets, and timelines.
- Support researchers
