**Volunteer Treasurer Position**
**Position**: Treasurer
**Responsibility**: Accountable to the Board of Directors, Membership and Organizations Funder.
**Term**: Officers of the corporation shall hold office for two years. If re-elected officers may run threeconsecutive terms.
**Main Duties**: Work alongside with Financial Advisor and oversee financial matters of the charity, Assume a leadership role on board committee or initiatives related to financial matters, Ensure that proper accounts and records are kept, ensuring financial resources are spent and invested in line with the charity’s policies, good governance, legal and regulatory requirements.
**Evaluation**: Annual evaluation completed by each board member.
**Qualifications and Skills**:
- Management & leadership skills, ability to comply with the Board's Code of Conduct; and demonstrated ability to think independently and work collaboratively.
- Capable and willing to attend bi-monthly Board and ad hoc committee meetings, actively contribute to the discussion, and participate in key events.
- Appreciation for the critical role of philanthropy at the Board level and a personal commitment to meet or exceed Board fundraising requirements; ability and willingness to communicate Simcoe Peer Supports mission, vision and strategic priorities to colleagues and solicit their financial support in a meaningful way.
- Ability to bring mature judgment and analytical vision to complex matters and bold enough to make difficult decisions.
- Natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals.
- Ability to have influence within their own community; ability to open doors and attract others in support of Simcoe Peer Supports mission and fundraising initiatives.
- An appreciation for, and understanding of, the role that non-profit organizations play in meeting critical needs in the community.
- Personal qualities of honesty, integrity credibility and high ethical standards.
- Strong business acumen.
- An innovative spirit; the ability to think “out of the box.”
- Passion for advocating in support of Simcoe Peer Supports priority issues.
**Benefits**:Volunteer position, as per accountability agreement the position is volunteered unpaid. Travel expenses and other board related expenses paid.
**Time Requirements**: Minimum of 6 meetings per year every other month. Roughly 1 to 2 per meeting and 5 to 20 hours hours between meetings.
**Key Roles of the Board**
The board of directors of an incorporated, non-profit organization is legally responsible for the governance of the organization. Within that mandate is the expectation that the board will develop, implement and monitor policies that will allow the organization to carry out its work. A board is elected by, and accountable to, its membership. While a board may appoint staff and/or committees to carry out specific work related to its policies, programs and services, the board is ultimately responsible for meeting agency outcomes.
Collectively, the board must:
- Determine a governance model and ensure that appropriate organizational policies and structures are in place
- Participate in the development of a mission and strategic plan for the organization
- Hire and ensure that an effective management team is in place (i.e., Executive Director)
- Maintain effective partnerships and communication with the community, the organization’s members and its stakeholders
- Maintain fiscal responsibility, including raising income, managing income, and approving and monitoring annual budgets
- Ensure transparency in all communication to members, stakeholders and the public
- Evaluate the organization’s work in relation to a strategic plan
- Evaluate the work of the board of directors, ensuring continuous renewal of the board, and plan for the succession and diversity of the board
Individually, each board member must:
- Act in the best interests of the organization
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of being a board member
- Be familiar with the organization’s bylaws, policies and procedures, strategic plan, mission, etc.
- Ensure he/she avoids conflicts of interest including operating in the best interest of the organization not in self-interest or the interest of a stakeholder group
- Respect confidentiality policies that pertain to membership and board discussions
- Keep informed about the organization’s financial activity and legal obligations
- Bring his/her own skills, experience and knowledge to the organization
- Attend board meetings regularly and arrive prepared for meetings
- Support board decisions once they have been voted on
