Working for our group of Eco tourism related companies is not your average job. Our head quarters are in Vancouver, our operations are throughout Baja, Mexico. We specialize in taking clients out on multi day adventures from shark diving to giant Mantas to petting gray whales to going out sailing. We have been in business since 1984 and have over 200 staff. We are a family owned and operated company. We are seeking a Controller to work across our group of companies reporting directly to the president of the company.

Position is based in Richmond, BC. The office is close to 5 Rd. and Steveston Highway. Our office is open Monday to Friday from 8 o'clock in the morning until 430 PM. It is a quiet office to work in which some people love, and other people do not like. Because we are a small company, there is always an element of change and flexibility in priorities and tasks. Your team will currently be one bookkeeper in Vancouver and a CPA and a bookkeeper in Cabo San Lucas, as well as a senior manager in Mexico, whose responsibilities include accounting.

Duties & Responsibilities:

- Develop, recommend, administer, and monitor accounting policies, procedures, and processes in support of the financial operations of the business
- Manage and oversee the company’s general ledger accounting activities in accordance with ASPE guidelines
- Prepare monthly financial statements along with variance analysis and interpretations to guide effective decision-making
- Prepare monthly reconciliations and post adjusting journal entries when needed
- Prepare and ensure accuracy of related-company billings and reconciliation of accounts
- Maintain fixed assets, deferred revenue (guest deposits) and other continuity schedules
- Identify efficiencies and opportunities for cost reductions across the business
- Manage the preparation of annual budgets (operating and capital) and conduct variance analysis and updated forecasts for financial reporting purposes
- Communicate with budget-holders to ensure maintenance of budgets
- Oversee cash management, bank account administration and petty cash operations
- Oversee reconciliation of data interface from guest reservation and POS systems to the accounting system
- Administer loan agreements for company borrowings
- Oversee accounts payable by ensuring appropriate approvals, entry of invoices, payments, and related reconciliations
- Review and process employee expense reimbursements for proper coding and authorization
- Manage and review payroll processing and compliance for both salary and hourly employees based in Canada and in Mexico
- Ensure compliance of required filings with WorkSafeBC, Canada Revenue Agency, and provincial Ministry of Finance
- Coordinate external financial audit activities for the company including the preparation of various yearend schedules, accruals, and analysis as needed

Qualifications:

- Ten-plus years of progressive responsibility and experience in an accounting and finance environment
- Ability to take charge of responsibilities and work with mínimal supervision and guidance in a teamwork environment
- Team player with excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively with others at all levels, both verbally and written
- High-level of attention to details to produce reliable and accurate reports and schedules
- Strong problem-solving and organizational skills
- Proficiency in Sage 50 or similar accounting software
- Advanced computer skills as well as proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite
