**Nature and Scope of Work**

The Apprenticeship Student Advisor provides specialized support to international students and newcomers enrolled in the ECE Apprenticeship Diploma program diploma program at NSCECE. The Advisor is responsible for providing academic and personal advising services, career support, and new student orientation to meet the needs of newcomer and English as an Additional Language (EAL) students. The Apprenticeship Student Advisor will act as a coach and mentor for students throughout their diploma program. The Apprenticeship Student Advisor will inspire, motivate, and assist students and will strive to ensure the highest levels of student outcomes and program satisfaction are achieved.

**Primary Job Responsibilities**

**Student Support**:

- Provide active case management to an assigned caseload of newcomer and international students enrolled in the ECE Apprenticeship Diploma program. Support students experiencing cross-cultural, familial, personal, or economic challenges impacting academic performance.
- Provide guidance and support to all newcomer students on settlement, cultural adjustment, and accessible support services.
- Interpret and explain college policies and procedures and their effect on the academic progress of students.
- Support students with employment skills such as resume writing, interview skills, conflict resolution, and understanding Canadian workplace culture.
- Support students with navigating language interpretation tools and services such as 211.
- Support students in accessing ECE Mentors who can offer guidance, support, and feedback.
- Proactively contact and be accessible to students on a regular basis.
- Offer assignment assistance, academic writing feedback, and orientation on academic integrity.
- Provide resources and referrals to students to assist them in successfully completing courses within the ECE program.
- Work with students on navigating support tools such as TurnItIn, ReadSpeaker, and VitalSource.
- Assist students in developing individual programs of study and/or managing accommodation requests when needed.
- Work with students on academic probation to develop an improvement plan; monitor progress and identify specific areas for assistance.
- Support the credit evaluation process of other post-secondary and international experience.
- Serve as student advocate. Review with each student how the program is going, how NSCECE is meeting their needs, and ideas to further support their success.
- Advise students on college policies and procedures regarding admission, registration, course and program withdrawals, academic standing, appeals, and graduation.
- Other responsibilities as deemed necessary.

**Faculty Support**
- Work collaboratively with faculty and practicum advisors to support the development of strategies to enhance student success.
- Work collaboratively with faculty and practicum advisors to develop cultural competency and strategies to support English as an Additional Language learners.
- Communicate concerns about student progress to faculty and administration in conjunction with coaching efforts and strategies.

**Community Relationships**:

- Participate in training and maintain a relationship with professional organizations (e.g., ISANS) to keep abreast of best practices in equity, diversity, inclusive, and accessibility.
- Use effective interpersonal communications skills with students, faculty, management and externals partners or community members, showing a sensitivity to intercultural communication.
- Represent the college to community groups, businesses, and professional associations/ organizations.
- Maintain and support an encouraging attitude towards colleagues.
- Participate in college staff development and team building opportunities.

**Qualifications**:

- Post-secondary degree in education, psychology, sociology, health services, counselling, or in a related area of study and at least 2 years of recent and related experience or an equivalent combination thereof.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion as well as a high level of cultural competency.Awareness of and sensitivity to diversity and cross-cultural differences and ability to deliver services and support towards EAL students.
- Knowledge of current issues on mental health, universal design for learning, theories and trends relating to student learning, learning disabilities, post-secondary education, assistive technology, advising, and retention is a must.
