The Wine Research Centre (WRC) at the University of British Columbia is a research collective spanning both campuses and government and industrial partners to facilitate wine education, knowledge mobilization and catalyze wine research in BC.

Job Summary

This position will implement the strategy of the WRC and provide support to all aspects of the WRC across both campuses. This position will be responsible for planning and coordinating centre activities, communication and outreach.

Organizational Status

This position will report to the WRC Directors, who in turn report to a council of Deans associated with the WRC (Faculty of Science, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Management, Land and Food Systems) and the Vice-President Research & Innovation Okanagan. This position will work closely with the WRC members, as well as with VPRI staff, and other internal and external collaborators

Work Performed

Under supervision of the Co-directors, this position will support the activities of the WRC through the catalysis of research activities between UBC and external partners. Specific duties will include:

- Develops and implements a strategic plan around communication within the team and to partners, exercising a liaison role for the WRC.
- Identifies partner-driven funding opportunities for individual and team research funding with partners in line with the mandate of the WRC
- Provides support to WRC faculty in connecting, engaging and working with external partners and funding agencies under direction from the Directors
- Captures and follows up on action items stemming from internal and external meetings.
- Responsible for the oversight of internal databases including partnerships, and funding opportunities.
- Responsible for the implementation and oversight of an interactive Asset Map spanning research capacity within UBC and external opportunities for partnerships.
- Collaborates with VPRI’s Communications team, contributes to the preparation of innovation-related success stories, as well as other research communication products, including WRC website.
- Coordinates with respective VPRI teams to provide strategic advice regarding external funding agency policies and procedures, intellectual property, confidentiality, budgets and overhead recovery.
- Works to understand the research capacity and capabilities of both campuses and identifies collaboration and research partnership opportunities
- Plans and coordinates internal education initiatives related to the development of research partnerships, in collaboration with the team.
- Develops metrics to analyze and report on team activity from multiple sources of data and databases.
- In conjunction with the Directors, implements budget tracking for WRC activities.
- Supports the administration and operation of the WRC shared facilities.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

As a representative of, and ambassador for, the WRC, this position will have influence on the team’s reputation both internally and externally. Poor judgement may harm the reputation of this relatively new team, and may result in lost research partnership opportunities for UBC researchers.

Supervision Received

This position will report directly to the Directors but is expected to have autonomy over day-to-day activities.

Supervision Given

Occasionally may be asked to oversee an undergraduate research assistant or Work Study student for special events.

Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
