POSITION FUNCTION:
Primarily duties are Indic language and Indic related English language acquisitions and cataloguing (MARC and non-MARC). Secondarily, catalogues other materials in English. Works on short and/or long-term projects as appropriate.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS/ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS:
Reports to Cataloging & Metadata Unit Librarian supervisor, with direct day-to-day direction and supervision provided by Team Leader, Asian Languages. Works closely with the Cataloging & Metadata Librarians. Has significant interactions with other staff in Collection Services and Asian Library. Irregularly interacts with staff across other library branches. Has primary responsible for communications with Indic language and Indic related English language acquisition vendors and other acquisition vendors as necessary for acquisition of Indic and Indic related English language resources.

WORK PERFORMED:
1 Acquisitions duties - 20%

1.1 Performs all tasks related to ordering, invoicing, and receiving, as well as related order and catalog record maintenance.

1.2 Responds to inquiries, problems and disputes brought forward by staff and vendors. Resolves problems or refers to supervisor as necessary.

1.3 Provides language support to Serials Team.

1.4 Monitors Indic and Indic related English language materials workflow in the Unit and ensures efficient and timely processing.

1.5 Loads vendor provided MARC records into Voyager.

2 Cataloguing duties - 70%

2.1 Performs MARC-based original descriptive and derived cataloging in accordance with established policies, procedures, and priorities for materials in all formats by creating or updating records in both local and shared databases.

2.2 Searches local and remote databases for “best available” or most appropriate bibliographic records. Updates holdings and imports the records into local database.

2.3 Supplies complete LC call numbers in select areas and non-LC call numbers and shelf marks according to local classification policies.

2.4 Verifies access points to ensure they conform to internationally based standards and/or local practice. Updates local authority records to reflect local practice.

2.5 Resolves snags and items requiring non-standard attention and treatment, identifying problems and developing solutions.

2.6 Communicates and consults with librarians/Branch staff regarding cataloguing treatment for print and non-print.

2.7 Creates and edits metadata for digital resources according to guidelines, and using various interfaces, protocols and standards.

2.8 Responds to questions and resolves problems reported by Library staff.

3 Other duties (10%)

3.1 Performs bibliographic maintenance as necessary.

3.2 Assesses record quality of MARC and non-MARC data using appropriate tools (e.g. MARCEdit, Microsoft Excel).

3.3 Performs record upgrade and maintenance for materials as necessary; resolves complex snags arising from collection moves; communicates with Branch staff as needed.

3.4 Serves on committees and task groups as appropriate and primarily on those charged with review of technical services policies, processes, and procedures.

3.5 Provides ongoing feedback and brings forth new ideas and problem-solving skills to improve effectiveness and efficiencies of pertinent technical services policies, processes, and procedures.

4 Inclusive duties

4.1 Interprets and ensures compliance with organizational rules, policies and procedures.

4.2 Keeps personal processing statistics.

4.3 Attends training sessions and meetings as required in order to keep cataloguing and metadata skills up-to-date.

4.4 Contributes to the on-going maintenance of the Library's online processing files, including the creation of documentation and updating of TS web based services and tools (currently Confluence, Shared drives, Website, Blog etc.).

4.5 Performs other related duties as required.

EXERCISING JUDGEMENT/CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR:
Performs duties independently under mínimal supervision. Work is performed within broad procedures and practices. Makes decisions in accordance with broadly established guidelines, Library and University policies and procedures, requiring initiative to complete them independently. Unusual or major problems are referred to supervisors in a timely manner. Good judgement is required in knowing when to refer an issue. Requires ongoing initiative to plan and complete recurring assignments independently and judgement to determine which methods are applicable in a situation.
