Waste Resource Education Officer

Reporting to the Manager - Education and Promotion, this position will focus on the development and delivery of Solid Waste/Resource educational activities to promote provincial and municipal waste/resource diversion programs. The successful applicant will have a waste resource management vision compatible with the HRM strategy and undertake activities as outlined in the HRM/ Divert NS Regional Education Contract and annual business plan.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Develops and delivers classroom presentations to one or more groups of students, classes or entire student assembly, promoting waste reduction, re-use, recycling and composting to include, but not limited to, assisting schools with greening activities to enhance diversion;
- Co-ordinates with special event (festival) organizers to promote separation of waste materials in accordance with Provincial and HRM Solid Waste/Resource Regulations;
- Assists in development and implementation of special communications and education projects such as Waste Reduction Week.
- Initiates and conducts community outreach activities with community groups and organizations to include, but not limited to, workshops and presentations to promote proper source separation;
- Initiates communication with businesses and institutions throughout HRM to deliver Solid Waste Resource education presentations, meetings and workshops with landlords, tenants, office properties, Universities, business associations, restaurants and others as identified by HRM;
- Assists the IC&I sector in the development of program and policy tools to enhance diversion;
- Develops and conducts information sessions and/or facility tours;
- Coordinates and attends display booths at trade shows and other special events;
- Writes and submits reports;
- Attends Divert NS education meetings to give direction and guidance in the planning of provincial waste/resource education activities;
- Administers and assists in the development of Solid Waste’s web page, social media feeds, What Goes Where App and other communication tools;
- Provides input and support for Solid Waste communication and education initiatives through development of brochures, guides and campaigns;
- Proactively seeks opportunities to enhance diversion through self-generated special projects;
- Conducts waste audits and characterization studies;
- Develops and delivers digital education
**QUALIFICATIONS**
**Education & Experience**
- An undergraduate degree in business, environmental sciences, engineering technology or related discipline;
- Three years’ experience in conducting public presentations;
- Three years’ experience in waste/resource management field developing and delivering public education programming;
- Valid Driver’s License is required for this position.
**Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities**
- Knowledge of HRM waste management strategy;
- Understanding of regulatory framework for municipal solid waste diversion and disposal systems;
- High level of understanding of the programs and mandates of Divert NS and Provincial Waste Management Strategy;
- General knowledge of NS Environment Act and Regulations, Municipal Waste By-Law, Provincial and Municipal Waste-Resource Management Strategy;
- Working knowledge of the service of municipal governments and the interdependencies/relationships between business units, customers, clients and Council;
- Proficiency with the following computer software: Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams, technical knowledge of solid waste/resource management systems, including processing, collection, and disposal systems;
- The ability to effectively deliver presentations to a wide variety of stakeholders.

**WORK STATUS**:Temporary Full Time - term ending September 2025
**HOURS OF WORK**:Monday to Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm; 35 hours per week
**SALARY**: NSGEU Local 222; Level 7 - $37.22 per hour
**WORK LOCATION**: 40 Alderney Drive, Dartmouth NS. NS. Work location can be changed according to operational requirements.
