**_About the position_**

The primary objective of the role is to empower and assist Indigenous students in achieving their personal, emotional, spiritual, mental, physical, and educational goals while promoting their cultural identity and overall well-being.

In this position, you will provide assistance to Indigenous students, individually and in groups, to support positive school engagement including attendance, behaviour and academics. You will be a trusted advocate, advisor, mentor, and counsellor particularly, in those instances when students are experiencing difficulties. This position promotes the exploration and expression of cultural identity among Indigenous students and supports connections for students and families to Indigenous community resources.

In addition, you will provide an inclusive space for students to seek support for mental wellness, social skills, healthy relationships, emotional regulation using a holistic, person-centered and strength-based approach. You will collaborate with school-based staff to implement skill-based and strength-based interventions for children/youth such as building resiliency, development of social skills, problem solving skills, self-awareness, anxiety reduction and stress management. In this position, you can also expect to provide after-school engagement, parent communication, identification and removal of barriers to school attendance and the teaching life-skills based on the Medicine Wheel.

**JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES**:

- 1. Indigenous student support
- Provide guidance and support to students, individually or in groups on wellness strategies based on the Medicine Wheel
- Monitor attendance and academic progress and troubleshoot strategies for improvement
- Identify barriers to school participation and implement constructive problem solutions
- Facilitate activities that lead to successful transitions between grades and/or schools
- Facilitate opportunities for learning from Knowledge Keepers and Elders
- Provide opportunities for exposure to a variety of mentors and careers
- Support existing programs to provide proactive interventions to address student needs
- 2. Program development
- Facilitate opportunities for students to learn and practice wellness strategies based on the Medicine Wheel
- Facilitate social and cultural programs focused on wellness and leadership development
- Facilitate transition programs, social justice initiatives, leadership clubs, cultural activities, career exposure, tutoring and parent engagement
- Collaborate with teachers, counselors and advisors to assure continued use of transition process to help students successfully adapt to the culture of new settings
- 3. Family engagement
- Create relationships with families, community organizations and resources
- Facilitate parenting groups and coordinate family conferences to increase engagement
- Act as a resource for families and provide culturally relevant referrals for families seeking specialized support
- Work in conjunction with student services team and learning designate to support communication with families, remove barriers to school engagement and resolve issues
- Share reports and student progress with school student services team and administration
- 4. Community connection
- Perform community development work in order to build working relationships and partnerships with service providers
- Assist school in the coordination of reconciliation opportunities for students
- Assist students in connecting with community resources
- Work with community partners to establish experiential opportunities that promote wellness
- 5. Multi-disciplinary team
- Collaborate with school teams and families to address student concerns
- Participate in staff and team meetings and case conferences
- Provide input into strategic planning, goals and objectives
- Model/discuss strategies and supports with classroom team
- Collaborate with members to implement strategies
- Attend MDT and other student services team meetings
- Assist in or facilitate the delivery of professional development to school staff

6. Maintain technical knowledge through a range of professional development activities

Degree or diploma in child and youth care, social services or related discipline, plus four years of experience working with Indigenous
