The Office of Institutional Research and Analysis provides leadership, advice and support for planning, policy formation and informed decision-making activities at McMaster University. To fulfill its mission and support the strategic goals of McMaster University, the office provides accurate, timely and high-quality information, data analysis and analytics to the university’s various academic and administrative offices and responds to data requests from external agencies. It supports, advises, and enables senior administration planning and decision making through the provision of performance metrics, benchmarks, projections, simulations, modelling, and effective analyses and insights based on a thorough understanding of McMaster and its external environment. Employees within Institutional Research and Analysis serve as the liaison with government, the U15 Data Exchange, Council of Ontario Universities, and other external agencies on institutional data and research activities.

**JOB DESCRIPTION**:
The Analytics and BI Intermediate Analyst, reporting to the Senior Manager, Analytics and BI, is responsible for working with the BI team and other IRA staff, and with stakeholders and other support units to develop analytics and business intelligence reports, dashboards and metrics for all functional areas to meet business requirements and to support evidence-based decision making at McMaster University. The incumbent is a key member of the BI team and works with other IRA team members to analyze and mine data, and translate data analysis and information for business needs into BI deliverables. A primary responsibility of the Intermediate Analyst is to design, develop and implement moderate to complex data transformation processes using the ETL or ELT tools that will migrate data from the central data warehouse, and other enterprise data sources. Author technical documents (ETL Architecture, ETL standards, ETL design specifications, ETL workflow, system architecture) and work with systems architects or PS Admins to develop solutions to technical issues and design issues. As one of the BI administrators, the Intermediate Analyst administers and responds to security and access issues related to BI deliverables.

**PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES**:

- Analyze and synthesize data analysis and information to support planning, policy changes and decision making as well as to understand issues and identify options to resolve issues.
- Design, develop and implement moderate to complex data transformation processes using the ETL tools to migrate data from the central data warehouse, and other enterprise data sources.
- Author technical documents (ETL Architecture, ETL standards, ETL design specifications, ETL workflow, system architecture) and work with systems architects or PS Admins to develop solutions to technical issues and design issues.
- Develop technical or programming scripts and stored procedures to augment the ETL process.
- Work closely with UTS in the design of ETL workflows processes and the preparation and scheduling of ETL workflows, using scripting where necessary. Conduct performance tuning of ETL mapping and load processes, as required.
- Ensure ETL best practices are incorporated into the design and development of the data warehouse and BI solution by establishing design standards and templates.
- Successfully navigate complex organizational relationships and structures, to achieve acceptance and adoption of the BI solutions.
- Work with business areas (student, finance, research and human resources) to understand requirements for modelling, metrics, dashboards, etc. and then generate required modelling, including modelling for enrolment, staffing, bargaining or financial purposes
- Conduct user interviews to validate the transformation rules. Evaluate data quality and provide written feedback as required.
- Conduct fit-gap analyses prior to and during BI projects in order to assess what business requires against what can and cannot be delivered by out-of-the-box data marts and what extensions are necessary to meet business needs.
- Develop the data mapping document and lead the ETL code development to meet business requirements. Compare data in system functionalities against data in the data warehouse and identify, recommend and implement opportunities to bring required data into the data marts or OBIEE.
