What can I expect to do in this role?

**Duties Will Include**:

- Participating in the Sexual Violence Advisory Group to improve ways that sexual assault complainants are dealt with in the criminal justice system and shape best practices for sexual violence prosecutions
- Providing legal and strategic advice to police on individual sexual violence investigations
- Providing legal and strategic advice related to sexual violence prosecutions to Crowns
- Providing information to the general public on sexual assault matters
- Conducting sexual assault preliminary hearings/trials in the Ontario Court of Justice and Superior Court of Justice as required
- Reviewing information, drafting indictments and other documents, including facta and direct indictments
- Providing mentoring and training to prosecutors and other justice participants on the conduct of sexual assault prosecutions
- Assisting other counsel with sexual violence prosecutions, research, etc.
- Developing and updating SVAG resource material on e-Library, including Directives, Confidential Advice to Prosecutors and other resources to assist Crown counsel and enhance the prosecution of sexual violence offences
- Making recommendations on legislative changes in the area of sexual violence
- Conducting training and education for Crowns, judiciary, police, victims' services, community and other stakeholders in the area of sexual violence investigations and prosecutions

How do I qualify?
Mandatory
- Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario

Legal Experience
- Working knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, criminal law procedures, rules of evidence and case law
- Demonstrated experience and expertise in sexual violence prosecutions
- Experience in and readiness to conduct sexual violence prosecutions in the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice
- Knowledge and understanding of the role and function of the prosecutor
- Demonstrated knowledge and appreciation of victims' issues and interests and a trauma-informed approach
- Experience delivering education, training and mentoring
- Proven research and analytical skills and an ability to organize a principled and strategic approach to cases and issues

Interpersonal and Communication Skills
- Demonstrated judgment and analytical ability to determine appropriate legal remedies
- Demonstrated research and analytical ability to organize a principled approach to cases and issues
- Demonstrated writing and advocacy skills
- Demonstrated interpersonal, presentation and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively both individually and as part of a team within the criminal justice system and with community stakeholders
- Demonstrated organizational skills, including ability to set priorities and respond promptly, flexibly and effectively to unexpected situations
- Demonstrated ability to respond promptly to advice requests from Crowns and police across the province

Other Essential Skills
- Technical ability to work effectively with computer technology and databases made available to professional staff
- Willingness to travel within the Region when required.
