**Salary Range**: Commensurate with experience and education.

**Who We Are**
The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is an advocacy organization, taking direction and fulfilling mandates as directed by First Nations in-Assembly through resolutions. As a national advocacy organization for First Nations, the AFN seeks to advance First Nations Inherent and Treaty Rights through the development policy, public education and where applicable, the co-development of legislation to build First Nations capacity.

**The Role**

The Assembly of First Nations is seeking a professional and highly skilled in-house lawyer to join our team. Reporting to General Counsel at AFN, this role is responsible for providing ongoing legal support to all sectors and advice on a broad range of corporate, legislative, policy and regulatory matters.

Legal Counsel develops positive, reciprocal relationships with government officials, the executive and First Nations Chiefs as well as various committee members, to develop, negotiate, enact, advance, and promote First Nations laws, legislation, treaties, contracts, positions, policies, and interests.

**Responsibilities**:
- Provides legal representation to the AFN and appears before administrative tribunals, boards, and all levels of court.
- Drafts case briefs and briefing notes on legislation, legal cases and opinions, and upcoming legal issues which will impact First Nations and the work of the AFN.
- Drafts speaking notes, communications materials, press statements, terms of reference (TOR), memorandums of understanding (MOU) and policy position papers, speaking notes, presentations, reports, funding proposals and correspondence.
- Drafts contracts, agreements, agreements in principle (AIP) legal memorandums, legal opinions, legal factum, litigation strategy documents, legal submissions, affidavits, examinations for discovery, transcripts, and evidence.
- Reviews legal documentation for accuracy and compliance with laws.
- Participates in national and international meetings and policy forums.
- Responds to information and action requests related to legal and justice matters and communicates relevant information throughout and across the Sector and to other AFN Sectors.
- Develops and maintains strong and productive networks and relationships with national, regional and community First Nations leaders, experts, and government officials, to advance and negotiate AFN positions related to First Nations’ legal and justice matters and concerns.
- Represents the AFN in a variety of forums related to legal and justice issues and matters.
- Promotes the interests of the AFN and enhances the AFN’s profile by improving public awareness and understanding.
- Implements Sector activities with political priorities from the National Chief’s Office, AFN Executive Committee including Chiefs-in-Assembly resolutions.
- Provides legal advice and support during Annual General Assemblies and Special Chiefs Assemblies.
- Provides technical support and legal advice to internal AFN partners.
- Assists with planning key milestone events.
- Other duties as assigned by General Counsel.
