**Job description**:
**Position Purpose summary**:The Addictions Counselor provides clinical counseling to participants, delivers and provides best practice-based input on psychoeducational classes, facilitates group counselling, supports and adds to the transitional plan.

**Addictions Counselling**:

- 1:1 Clinical counselling
- Building a schedule of your case load as prescribed by the program; managing the schedule (approx. 30)
- Ensuring accountability for attendance on counselling sessions (by participants)
- Carry out assessment activities, group facilitation, teaching as prescribed in the Program Policy and Procedure Manual
- Work with participants (caseload) individually, in groups, in classroom/seminars, in one-to-one counseling, and in crisis intervention
- Formulate treatment strategies that consider the multi-disciplinary nature of The Edmonton Centre of Hope, based on collection and analysis of data about the individual client
- Request and arrange, if necessary, professional outside assessment(s) of participants
- Consider and value input from other Addictions Program staff and Edmonton Centre of Hope personnel in formulating treatment recommendations and the course of counseling for the participants
- Consult regularly with the program manager regarding participant progress
- Model appropriate behavior and intervene in crisis situations, de-escalation, mediation.
- Support the program(s) by participating in scheduled activities and classes
- Remain up to date in the field of practice (addictions and trauma) through continued education and trainings.
- Liaise with Police, Ministry, court personnel, community agencies, participants’ families and other resources as required
- All other duties as assigned

**Case Management**:

- Maintain current and accurate documentation for each client on his/her caseload as prescribed in the Policy and Procedure Manual
- Carry out proper intake procedures as required
- Follow the approved discharge procedure when discharging participants from caseload
- Submit verbal and written participant progress reports as per the Program Policy Manual or as directed
- Present case reports and progress of participants and give input to case management of total participant population through case management meetings
- Participate in regularly scheduled one-to-one meetings with the Program Manager
- Regularly review participant files to assess and determine treatment course for participants and prepare treatment planning documents for review with assigned participants (caseload) and to update these based on knowledge gained
- All other duties as assigned

**Planning and Development**:

- Actively participate in program evaluation and improvement which would include, but is not limited to, offering suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions and procedures
- Participate fully and constructively in staff meetings and in-service training
- Provide guidance and support to volunteers, students, and newly hired staff
- All other duties as assigned

**Qualifications and Education requirements**:

- *NOTE: For some jobs, you may be required to provide validated educational documentation._

**Education/Certifications**:

- Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences or equivalent education and experience as determined by The Edmonton Centre of Hope (e.g. BSW, BA. Psychology)
- Professional training and education in the fields of counselling, substance dependence and trauma
- Formal education in Indigenous studies is an asset
- Current registration with a professional College (e.g. Alberta College of Social Workers, College of Alberta Psychologists)
- And/or registration with a Provincial or Canada wide recognized counselling body (e.g. ACTA, CACCF)
