Job description:

Position Purpose summary:
The Counselor provides clinical counseling, assessments, scoring, reporting, supervision, transitional planning, case management and facilitates programs. The Counsellor must be certified by a registration body (ie, RSW, ACTA)

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Counselling:

  • Carry out assessment activities, group facilitation, teaching and individual counseling activities as directed.
  • Work with assigned clients (caseload) individually, in groups, in classroom/seminars, in onetoone counseling, and in crisis intervention
  • Formulate treatment strategies which take into account the multidisciplinary nature of The Edmonton Centre of Hope, based on collection and analysis of data about the individual client
  • Request and arrange, if necessary, professional outside assessment(s) of a client
  • Take into account and value input from other Program staff and Edmonton Centre of Hope personnel in formulating treatment recommendations and the course of counseling
  • Consult regularly with the Program Manager regarding client progress, treatment and concerns
  • Model appropriate behavior and intervene in crisis situations
  • Assist clients with practical everyday needs (e.g. bus tickets, meal passes, etc.)
  • Monitor client's assigned housekeeping duties and work experience/therapy tasks
  • Give oversight to client residential area ensuring that the clients are completing assigned tasks to keep their common and private areas clean, tidy, and uncluttered at all times
  • Support the Program(s) by participating in scheduled activities and classes
  • Refer clients to appropriate sources (internal and external) such as, but not limited to, housing, employment and education
  • Develop and carry out personal goals and objectives related to training, education, personal recovery and recognized certification in the field of addictions
  • Liaise with Police, Ministry, court personnel, community agencies, client families and other resources as required
  • All other duties as assigned

Case Management:

  • Maintain current and accurate documentation for each client on his/her caseload. Carry out intake procedures as required.
  • Submit verbal and written client progress reports. Transitional plan to be reviewed every 45 days. Present case reports and progress of clients at regularly scheduled team meetings and give input to case management of total client population through case management meetings.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled meetings.
  • Regularly review client files to assess and determine treatment course for clients and prepare treatment planning documents for review with assigned clients (caseload).
  • All other duties as assigned

Planning and Development:

  • Actively participate in program evaluation and improvement which included, but is not limited to, offering suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions and procedures
  • Participate fully and constructively in staff meetings and inservice training
  • Provide guidance and support to volunteers, students, and newly hired staff
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Education requirements:

Education/Certifications:

  • Completion of a Bachelor's Degree in the Social Sciences
  • Professional training and education in the fields of counselling and addictions

Current registration with a professional College (e.g. Alberta College of Social Workers, College of Alberta Psychologists, ACTA ) or eligible and currently working toward registration with the relevant professional College

  • Current Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check
