_**HORTICULTURE OPERATIONS SUPPORT**_

The Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre is committed to ensuring a food secure community where all people have access to safe, affordable, and nutritious food. In our Learning Centre we offer various learning, self-help, and life skills programs that are supportive of learning needs and aspirations within a family-oriented, empowering, and self-directed environment.

The Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre’s (SFBLC) Garden Patch is a 1.5 acre urban farm that grows 15-20,000 lbs. of food for distribution to the community in emergency food baskets. The Garden Patch is also a location for community engagement that brings together 2,300 volunteers annually, including school groups, corporate teams, and community members to cultivate in a welcoming space. Education is also critical to the success of the Garden Patch. Every year we offer free workshops, programs, and one-on-one mentorship that allow the community to learn and connect with food in the city.

**Job purpose**

The Horticulture Operations Support position at the SFBLC works with the Garden Patch Site Coordinators and is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operations of the Garden Patch, including seeding, watering, mulching, composting, and harvesting. The Horticulture Operations Support will be required to direct on-site volunteers and assist with delivering programming, educational engagements, and tours to garden visitors under the supervision of the Education Coordinator. Your responsibilities include supporting the work of the Education Coordinator for planning and execution of the educational events, guiding volunteers at site, collaborating closely with the Agriculture Coordinator for food production and ensure the site is well-maintained, safe, organized, and welcoming for staff, visitors, and volunteers. You work toward a well-maintained garden, a collaborative and engaged work culture and excellent volunteer experience.

**Duties and responsibilities**:
**Support food production at the Garden Patch including**:

- Manual labour related to sustainable food production such as garden planning, planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, composting, mulching, etc.
- Collecting accurate records on harvest weight, irrigation levels, and planting.

**Support overall site maintenance activities including**:

- Assist with leading volunteer groups, as required.
- Ensuring the Garden Patch is well maintained, clean, safe, organized, and welcoming for staff, visitors, and volunteers.
- Ensure staff and volunteers have the tools and knowledge they need to work effectively.
- Organizing and maintaining project supplies.
- Ensuring garbage and recycling are properly sorted and disposed of.

**Facilitate engagement activities and educational workshops**:

- Support educational workshops hosted in the garden throughout the season.
- Publicize workshops to the public.
- Guiding and directing on-site visitors and volunteers, as required.
- Guiding school and community groups, as required.
- Log attendance and gather testimonials and feedback from volunteers.

**Social Media**:

- Support the Garden Patch social media accounts.
- Help gather content for social media.

**Office/Administrative duties, including**:

- Maintain logs of agricultural inputs and harvests.
- Assume responsibilities of Coordinators in their absence.

**Other Duties**:

- Contribute to an inclusive environment where clients, staff, and volunteers are treated respectfully.
- Other duties as required to contribute to the mission of the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre.

**Qualifications**

Post-secondary degree or diploma in agriculture, horticulture, or a related field, is an asset. Equivalent knowledge and experience may be considered.
- Familiarity with community gardens or working with volunteers on a community project is an asset.
- Must have a class 5 driver’s license and be comfortable driving pick-up trucks, and cargo vans.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
