In collaboration with colleagues in other offices, the Director, Conflict Management Services will be responsible for providing leadership, oversight, and expertise to the University on conflict management/engagement practices, including strategic planning, capacity building of Leaders around conflict management practices, providing guidance, advice and intervention on active conflicts as needed, and supporting all faculties, units, leaders and employees in the workplace with a focus on restorative and sustainable outcomes, including post conflict support, leading to higher workplace engagement.

The Director develops proactive strategies to educate and strengthen leaders’ capacity to engage and support conflict management by building awareness and competencies, and focusing on restorative and sustainable ways of engaging with conflict. This is in service of creating a culture of engagement with conflict through open, productive communication by leaders, and supporting them in building their curiosity and expertise in handling these situations at a local level. The Director will also work on coordinating existing education, tools, and programs with other offices, through building and leading communities of practice.

The Director creates and drives the vision of a conflict engagement office that designs, develops, and implements initiatives and interventions for all leaders and employees, including staff, faculty, and student employees to influence behavior change and enhance interpersonal and community capacity, resulting in positive and productive workplace engagement. This will include working with units on active conflict(s) and providing support and interventions in partnership with leaders and employees.

The Director and their team will partner with units, faculties, leaders, employees, and human resources or other offices to support restorative practices after an investigation or a conflict intervention has completed, providing spaces for healing and a path to sustainable post conflict workspaces.

The Director reports to the Associate Vice-President, Human Resources, and will work closely with conflict engagement counterparts within the University, human resources, and other key stakeholders to support faculties and units.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Associate Vice President, Human Resources. Over time, the Director will build a team of Conflict Management Specialists that proactively develop and implement conflict management education initiatives, toolkits, and support conflict education and awareness programs, while also supporting leaders and employees with emerging and ongoing conflict within the workplace.

This position develops partnerships across the University community, including with other conflict engagement resources and teams, human resources, heads of units, and/or unions and associations as appropriate. They will assess conflict engagement needs and design the vision, strategy, and programming to build conflict management capacity across the University.

They will build relationships with individuals, community organizations, professional organizations, post-secondary institutions, and other partners to enhance the University’s goal of being a top employer and share and learn from best practices.
