Assistant Dean, Resident Affairs

Reporting to the Provost and Vice President Academic and in collaboration with the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education, the Assistant Dean, Resident Affairs, is responsible to oversee the Resident Wellness Program including the integration of Resident Affairs within NOSM University’s Learner Support Services unit.
The role also oversees resident support and policy as a whole for the Postgraduate Medical Education Committee (PGMEC) and supervises the clinical leadership positions of the Education Advisory Board Lead, PGME Francophone Health Lead(s), PGME Indigenous Health Lead(s), and the International Medical Graduates Coordinator.
The position regularly collaborates with the Senior Director, PGME and the office of Learner Support Services, as well as the Associate Dean of Equity and Inclusion in order to provide robust support to resident needs.
**Responsibilities**:
Tasks include, but are not limited to the following:
**Leadership and Administrative Responsibilities**
- Represents the interests of PGME program directors, faculty leadership, residents and PARO in the transition to an integrated whole-university wellness initiatives within Learner Support Services Office and other integrated learner support activities.
- Works in parallel to the Assistant Dean Learner Affairs and collaborates on learner wellness across the continuum of medical and allied health programs at NOSM U. Maintains seamless linkages with both the PGME Office and the whole-university Learner Support Services Office.
- In collaboration with the AD PGME, maintains the Terms of Reference for the Postgraduate Wellness Advisory Committee for NOSM U and assesses the future direction of this PGMEC sub-committee; Chairs and oversees the work of this committee.
- Co-Chairs Accommodation Sub-Committee.
- In collaboration with the AD PGME, supervises and works with the International Medical Graduates (IMG) Coordinator, Francophone Health Lead(s), Indigenous Health Lead(s), Education Advisory Board (EAB) Lead, PGY1 Core Curriculum Coordinator to develop an integrated resident academic and personal support system and related core academic sessions. Leads these roles to develop strategic and operation plans, with deliverables for their roles.
- Participates as a member of the Postgraduate Medical Education Committee (PGMEC) and report on Wellness activities at PGMEC meetings.
- Attends specific Residency Program Committees by invitation to ensure the wellness programming is appropriately directed for residents.
- Represents NOSM U on national PGME committees related to postgraduate resident wellness.
- Works with PGME management to provide direction and constructive feedback to coordinators and administrators supporting PGME wellness and related support roles.
**Policy and Procedure Development**
- Ensures that Wellness policies and processes within PGME and the overall NOSM Wellness Office reflect the unique needs of residents and address the complexity of physician health at the postgraduate level.
- Reviews other related policies (e.g. housing, transportation, post-call relief, intimidation and harassment, conflict prevention and management, and resident recruitment and orientation). In addition, provides counsel and support to residency programs regarding specific safety and wellness related policies.
- Is familiar with process and work flows related to the integration of the Whole university Wellness Office inclusive of accommodations processing, confidentiality and handling of personal information, and communication work flows within PGME, resident mistreatment reporting.
**Wellness Program Development and Academic Integration**
- Develops and maintains a proactive approach to wellness/resiliency curriculum for NOSM U residents and clinical preceptors. Provides advice to Program Directors to implement discipline-specific wellness activities (e.g. mentoring, resident support rounds).
- Contributes to whole university efforts across UME, PGME, Faculty Affairs and CEPD to develop wellness programs on transitions (UME to PGME, PGME to practice/CEPD).
- Identifies national and environmental trends to resident support and wellness initiatives.
- Directs the communication and promotion activities related to the availability of resident wellness services and regularly contributes to Wellness features in PGME communication vehicles, and other NOSM U communication avenues.
- Oversees PGME participation in events designed to increase program visibility and access (e.g. annual Wellness Day with grand rounds, workshops, awards, activities) and participates in well-established existing events (e.g., Northern Constellations, Resident Retreats, PGME Orientation, PGME core academic events).
- Works with the PGY1 Core Academic Coordinator to ensure effective delivery of core postgraduate academic programing in wellness, Indigenous and Francophone health, patient safety and CQI.
**Resident and Faculty Support**
- Provides advice to Program
