Purpose
The Research Assistant will join the Brain-Heart Interconnectome (BHI) Research Program team, a $109 million initiative funded by the CFREF (Canada First Research Excellence Fund). This innovative program will transform the prevention and treatment of brain-heart interconnected conditions, improving the health and quality of life of Canadians and people worldwide.
In this role, the Research Assistant will play a crucial part in developing and implementing data standards for various data types, such as imaging and cardiac data. This will involve establishing comprehensive standards for the Brain-Heart Collaborative Data Portal, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and interoperability across diverse datasets. The portal is a consortium effort led by a range of partner organizations, designed to provide a user-friendly data platform with centralized access to curated brain-heart data, data resources, analytic tools and open science archiving capabilities. The portal will provide end users with cutting-edge data curation (e.g., access to multiple data sources, linkage capabilities, and analytic tools), a data repository, and data management and governance resources. The role would be ideal for someone with knowledge of the Canadian academic research and data landscape.
Reporting to the Chairs of the Brain-Heart Collaborative Portal and collaborating closely with the BHI Data Portal Steering Committee and the technical team at McGill University, the Research Assistant will collaborate with researchers and data engineers to gather, refine data handling guidelines and standardize data formats and protocols for the different data types. They will integrate these requirements into the portal’s infrastructure and provide training to educate users on its features and benefits. The Research Assistant will develop innovative solutions and ensure alignment of initiatives with long-term objectives, contributing to the strategic direction of the Brain-Heart Collaborative Portal. The Research Assistant will also facilitate collaboration between diverse organizations, data sources, and stakeholder groups by acting as a cross-cutting liaison.
**Responsibilities**:
- Create data standards for various types of data, including imaging and cardiac data, ensuring consistency, compatibility, and clear guidelines for handling user data and consent.
- Standardize data formats and protocols to ensure consistency and compatibility across different types of data within the portal.
- Work closely with researchers, data engineers and users to gather feedback, refine data standards, and provide training and support on standardization practices and compliance.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation of data standards and guidelines, regularly update them to reflect changes in technology or research requirements and develop dashboards to improve data transparency and accessibility.
- Ensure secure, anonymized access to data, support data analysis by adhering to established standards, and conduct tailored training sessions on both technical infrastructure and principles of openness and community resource sharing.
Mandatory qualifications
- Master’s degree (e.g., Biotechnology, Master of Health Administration, or degree in a related field)
- Requires 3 years of relevant experience as a Research Assistant
- Experience with data governance, stakeholder engagement, and/or data science
