Indigenous Relations Strategic Planner

This Indigenous Relations strategic planner will be a key player in a complex file where they will initiate, manage, and complete project work related to advancing reconciliation and strengthening relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to urban Indigenous communities, Knowledge Keepers and Elders, as well as First Nation and Mėtis governments. This position will be a content expert and will lead and coordinate strategic plans or goal development, evaluation and projects for the section, working closely in collaboration with branch and corporate colleagues. They will ensure projects are developed in a meaningful and effective way, with an inclusive and Indigenous lens while balancing the evolving corporate needs and learning in the area of reconciliation.

- Plan and lead complex and/or sensitive projects within a specific timeframe and/or budget that will advance work in key areas such as The Indigenous Framework, Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Calls for Justice, and Intergovernmental strategies
- Research emerging trends in strategy and business planning, related to Indigenous peoples, Indigenous practice, protocols and approaches to the corporation’s work.
- Develop, manage and implement all key projects successfully in a timely manner while building and maintaining relationships across the corporation and with Indigenous community leaders, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers, local organizations and with Indigenous governments and rights organizations.
- Prepare, communicate and disseminate results of projects with key stakeholders and senior leadership using multiple tools, including both verbal and written communication channels.
- Provide strategic planning or support, guidance and advice to the Director, Team Leads and Team Members in developing work and/or project plans
- Bring content expertise and advice from lived experience working with and in Indigenous communities to assigned projects and initiatives within the section and when necessary, to other work across the corporation
- Develop and monitor data and evaluation frameworks when applicable
- Provide leadership, research, analysis, monitoring and recommendations on a wide variety of issues
- Develop relationships with community members and leaders, city leadership, and multiple stakeholders
- Represent the section on committees and working groups for various branch, department, and corporate initiatives
- Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications:

- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field, such as Indigenous Studies, Sociology, Political Science, Public Administration, or other related field of study. An emphasis on, or coursework in, Indigenous Studies would be considered an asset. A related Masters Degree would be considered an asset
- A minimum of 5 years professional experience which includes demonstrated competency in project management and strategic planning
- A minimum of 5 years experience in community development and relations work with Indigenous non-profits/organizations, leaders, community members, as well as with Indigenous and other orders of government
- An understanding of diverse and marginalized communities, which may be developed through lived experience
- Significant understanding of Indigenous communities, their history, culture and current environment. Personal value base compatible with diversity and inclusion principles, GBA+, anti-racist approaches and human rights advocacy
- Knowledge of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP), Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Calls for Justice
- Strong organization, time management and prioritization skills
- Strong relationship builder
- Ability to work in a collaborative team environment
- Excellent communications, presentation and facilitation skills are required
- Ability to work independently, exercise judgment and make appropriate decisions on issues which may be sensitive or confidential in nature
- Strong research and problem solving skills to gather required information, make decisions and develop recommendations
- Experience with research, evaluation and data and awareness of inclusive and ethical practices that decolonize practice
- Ability to work independently and in cross functional teams, across programs and work collaboratively to share resources and information
- Ability to take an intersectional approach across the branch/corporation and to implement big picture & strategic thinking
