**Duties**:
Reporting to the Director, International Student Services, jointly offer individual student advising and clinical counselling sessions for international students at Vancouver Island University, including international students at The High School at VIU. Participate in identifying and analyzing the needs of international students, and designing research-informed tools, programs and documentation that allow for successful international student integration and retention. This role works collaboratively with a team of International Student Advisors and/or Advisor/Counsellors, along with other colleagues in International Education, central Counselling services, and across other units at VIU. All areas work together in providing support for international students in order to facilitate their transition, development, sense of belonging, well-being, and success at VIU and in the community.

Counselling Duties 50% (Position 00209):
The International Students' Counsellor provides culturally sensitive clinical counselling support to enrolled university students and students enrolled in the High School at VIU, including Intake, assessment, treatment planning, brief solution-focused therapeutic interventions, and appropriate crisis response when needed.

Clinical documentation and records must be entered and kept in accordance with FIPPA regulations and the code of conduct for the Counsellor's professional regulatory body. The International Students' Counsellor participates in peer consultation and quality assurance audits.

The focus of International Students' Counselling is to support students who present with a variety of psychosocial issues, by using appropriate evidence-based clinical counselling methods to increase students' personal and academic success potential.

Duties also include creating, developing, implementing, and presenting psycho-educational materials and presentations covering a variety of wellbeing-focused topics for students, such as workshops for anxiety and mood management, and healthy relationship education sessions.

This role requires familiarity and formal liaisons with both on and off campus community resources to enable the counsellor to make appropriate referrals when needed AND to act as a resource for faculty and staff to support psychosocial wellness for students.

Advising Duties 50% (Position 00211):

- Provides individual, confidential advising and support for international students regarding academic, administrative, and personal matters.
- Assists students to clarify career and academic goals and develop suitable educational plans. Provides accurate information to international students, including appropriate courses or programs to meet identified career/program objectives.
- When needed, refers students to other VIU resources and professionals.

General Duties:

- Maintains confidential counselling & advising records/databases and provides statistical reports on service delivery as required.
- Keeps abreast of best practices in international student counselling, advising, and retention as well as best practices in academic advising.
- Monitors global events that may have an impact on VIU international students and families.
- Collaborates with the ISS team on the creation, development and evaluation of research-informed support programs and interventions to improve the personal and academic success of VIU International students, including collaborative initiatives with specific programs and/or faculties.
- Develops and facilitates presentations and teaching activities.
- Ensures that students are offered student-centered, culturally-sensitive and appropriate services during their life cycle at VIU.
- Exemplifies professionalism and a high standard of ethical behavior.

**Required Qualifications**:

- Master's degree in Counselling, Psychology (Counselling or Clinical), or Social Work from an appropriately accredited institution.
- Current certification with a degree-appropriate governing/legal body or association (e.g. BCACC or similar).
- Excellent crisis management, intervention, and problem solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing with students, colleagues, referral sources, and the campus community.
