The Legal Service Division’s Civil Litigation Team operates in Edmonton and Calgary. It handles all types of civil litigation by and against the Government of Alberta except aboriginal law and constitutional matters. One of its clients is the Civil Forfeiture Office (CFO) within the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Services.

CFO is also increasingly involved in interprovincial referrals, where property associated with a crime is located in two or more provinces, requiring collaboration among the provincial CFOs, litigation lawyers, and the referring police agencies.
Reporting to the Director of Civil Litigation, the Assistant Director - Civil Forfeiture will deliver senior litigation services to the CFO by handling civil forfeiture files, leading a group of lawyers and paralegals providing litigation services to the CFO (the Civil Forfeiture Practice Group), and serving as CFO client relationship manager. - accountability for meeting the Civil Forfeiture Practice Group’s service delivery commitment to the CFO
- regular communications with the CFO Director and other CFO personnel
- maintaining current knowledge of the relevant law and court procedures
- teaching, mentoring, and coaching Civil Forfeiture Practice Group members
- succession planning to ensure continued and ongoing service delivery to the CFO
- drafting briefing notes and other required reporting, including high priority and urgent requests on legal and non-legal issues and sensitive litigation
- managing outside counsel matters
